antler scales complete !!

well after digging out another rack i figured id give the antler scales another shot ... i have enough left to play with and i think ill try to make another set that is 2 piece with a wedge after i get another belt for my sander so that i can work down the slabs i plan on cutting .. anyway !!

so this point came off of a buck i sjot about 15years ago ( can still go to the exact spot and remember it like it was yesturday ) m it had been in the attic and with a nicer buck on the wall it was just collecting dust ..

just as my practice one from the other day i cut it down the middle ( or as close as i could) then used a cutting wheel to even things out (or try to ) .... the original blade i cut this for was a Packwood but the grind just didnt feel right to balance out the antler so i remembered i had a 6/8 full wedge W&B laying around so i tossed in there and it made a world of difference as far as balance and appearence !! not a proffesional job on the scales but they meet there purpose and the ruff look matches the small pits on this wedge !!!

so now its done , honed , stropped and ready to shave !!!

it was by pure pure luck !!!!! i honestly never even thought about any sort of balance or anything of the nauture but the Packwood just didnt look right in this set and felt even worse so when i put the wedge in is when the bell went off in my head about balance and such and it just felt right ...

soon as the knots come in ...lol.. made them the other day !! thats where my mind started heading in the direction of scales ..lol

Really nice job =] I'm not a fan of antler particularly cause' it looks so difficult to make scales out of it lol, well done.

Nice job! I also made scales from antler in the past, but the result was not as nice as yours... did you put any finishing on them? Anything to preserve from water damage or to polish? I used shellack, that preserves from water, but gave a soft pink tone to the softer bone...

i used a stain/poly combo on any area i had to , then a satin polyurethane over everything ... same thing with the brush handles ... the stain to knock out the bright white , then the poly satin finish ... to be honest i wouldnt think you would really need anything on the outer or area that wasnt cut , figure they have been wet many of times and those are many moons old ...lol..
the pictures make them look better then they really are !!! they have many flaws that the camera or guy behind it could hide ..lol..

My concern was mainly with rust. If the scales get accidentally wet, and they keep water inside, it might rust the blade... But it didn't happen :D
