I wonder if this isn't related to the different hones we use over here compared to the continent. The Norton and Shapton synthetic hones makes extremely fast work of the friodur and puma inox razors. Several of my first razors were Friodurs and I thought they were quite simple to hone. But I could see how they would be annoying to hone on a slow natural hone like the coticule. This topic came up when we were discussing the wacker razors and how much trouble they are on the synthetic hones because of the microchipping problem. But the Friodurs, which seem to be about the same hardness as the Wackers, don't suffer the microchipping problem so the aggressive ceramic hones work beautifully on the Friodurs but chip the Wackers.
I notice Dave also thinks the Friodurs are tough to hone, but I believe you use the chinese waterstone don't you Dave? And that's a slow natural stone as well.
