Dovo razors, do any come from the factory shave ready?

Ok, so on a local website, there is a new vendor selling Dovo razors, not sure what model. just called "top of the line" in ad. It has a worked spine with gold wash, looks nice. I questioned whether it had been honed, and shave ready, since, to me, this seems to be the most common problem with alot of beginners not knowing what that means, and promptly giving up. The reply was "I've been talking to Dovo New Zealand agents this morning and they have informed me that these top of the line razors are shave ready to use from their German factory technicians boxed and sealed. They are the authority on their own brand of products." My question, is this correct?, The general consensus around here is that they aren't.

Thanks Glen. By chance, i have a razor from another member that you honed, it is how i judge my other razors. I have no intention of buying it, like my vintage razors too much, i just needed confirmation of what i have already learned from here before i question vendor further.

But, still the "Shave Test" that single well executed and planned out stroke from Sideburn line to Jawline is the determining factor, if that stroke shaves smooth and clean then the razor is "Shave Ready"... As you can see from that answer there can be different definitions of "Shave Ready" but that is the least it should do...

Test both razors one right after the other, and see the comparison on that single stroke ... You should have your answer

Well there is no convincing this guy, he maintains they come from the factory shave ready, and that he has many satisfied customers, although he only has one sale, and not for a razor. I offered to shave test one, but he is not having it. Just need to find out who the satisfied customers were, and pick up some cheap Dovo razors. :rofl2:

I have two new Dovo's and the short answer is no.The factory edge needs a bit more polish on it to be shave ready.The first I bought needed 10 laps on an 8k norton and 5 laps croOx on rough leather to smooth it out,the second the vendor did that small job for me.Both shave great now and I would not hesitate to buy another one.

I find that a bit odd, i picked up a NOS Kropp a while back, probably 60 years old, stropped it and shaved with it. I am a builder, so it is like me building a house and then not handing over the keys, looks great, but you can't use it.

I do think that's the general state of things these days: the company goes so far as to make it look sharp, but that doesn't mean it is. But the other day I saw a Dubl Duck package and it said it was guaranteed, and they'd take it back if you hadn't honed it, implying that in their opinion it was ready out of the box, and you should try it and decide if it was good, right out of the box. I guess times change.

I bought a new silver steel Boker last week. The vendor said it would be hard to sharpen, but I felt it was awfully close out of the box, sharpening it took literally five minutes, and I'm happier with it than anything else I own. Some apparently-undamaged Ebay specials have taken me a whole lot longer to get working.

My last boss at work was trying to get an officially recognized sarcasm font for just this reason.

If never worked out though, and I'm still never really sure if he's serious.

Makes for a lot of laughs....

I have already read about razors in general not coming shave ready. It wasn't my intention to flog a dead horse here, i just wanted confirmation from a couple of senior members before i took the issue up with vendor. As it stands, vendor still maintains they are shave ready, can't be bothered trying to convince him otherwise, case closed.

I'll add to your confirmation just in case :) Factory edge Dovos aren't shave ready by "our" standards. Will they cut hair off your face? Yep, they sure will...but will it be an overall pleasant experience? Probably not...lol. Pretty sure you won't need to ask me how I know this ;)

I bought a Dovo Bismark about two years ago and it was shave ready from the factory.
Maybe the factory honing did not bring the edge at its highest potential but it was definitely shave ready.

I am actually going to take a second and explain the problem with that statement,, THE COST OF SHIPPING... Plus the disappointment

When you senior members post stuff like that, some poor newb is going to order a Dovo off Amazon or from a Vendor that doesn't hone all the razors and he is not going to understand or have the experience to do what is delineated in this thread

And now your statement just cost that poor newb at least an extra $10 in shipping and no telling how many days or weeks of extra time waiting for the razor to go back and forth for honing.. Also take into account how disappointing it is when that Dovo or TI doesn't shave clean and smooth like they read about here...

Just because those of us with experience can get some of them to shave and know how to tweak them better with our Strops and Pastes does not mean they are "Shave Ready" for a new guy..

Think of the poor newbs asking these questions and struggling through, they will be reading your answer... I can link 100's of threads with proof of what I am saying...

Man, that is the problem who use sarcasm on regular basis, you never know when they are being serious. I am trying to get better at not using it.

Every Dovo I've purchased just needed a bit of stropping out of the box and they were good to go. Maybe I've just been lucky.

I cannot be considered as a “senior member” in straight shaving as I started using a straight razor only three years ago.

I know that in most cases the newly bought straight razor is not shave ready and this has been told hundreds of times here in many posts. It is also the main answer that we see in this thread.

However, since I was lucky enough to get a new Dovo that was actually shave ready I believe that it is worthy reporting it in order to make clear that some rare times the straight razor could be shave ready from the factory.

Perhaps an accurate way to state it like they say at Classic Shaving: the answer is, "maybe." Some people (like me) find factory edges to be ready to shave, or close enough that a little stropping is all that is needed. Others (novices or experts) who need or desire the keenest possible edge attainable will often find a factory edge less than shave ready. Which group is "right?" Well, they both are!

I shaved with a new fresh out the box bismark and in my 2mth old at the time newby hands it didn't shave too bad. Could feel the difference compared to a "shave ready" edge from whipped dog tho. It's since been honed by Oz and is a totally different animal, much smoother.
