Hi,
i got my first Fullsize W&B today, but now have the Problem that i didnt know when it was produced,
can anyone help me?
Its full Hollow Ground and seems rarely sharpened, the Tang is marked Manufactured by Wade and Butcher, Sheffield.

Seriously from the tang I would say after early 1900's.
There is some great information here The straight razor - Straight Razor Place Wiki that can help with this.
If I am not mistaken it was in 1892 that razor makers were required to put the country of manufacture on a razor to be eligible for patent protection.
In 1914 it became law to add the words "made in".
If I am not correct here I would appreciate being corrected.

After a long time now i decided to rescale my only W&B, the Original Scales had been warped and all the nics, i was too ugly in my eyes, over that the Blade scratched the inside of the Scales.

I didnt made the Scales, i only got them from a friend of mine who had let made them to fit an 8/8 Friodur (funny that the Swing of the Scales fit the Swing of the Blade, just if both were made to be together :-)).

Looks good, was it a barber notched razor at one point and shortened? Looks like it slightly dips in along the front edge
Yes, im sure that it once had a Barbers Notch, i guess that it was a typical wedge before it was regrounded, maybe the Barbes Notch made problems while grinding it hollow?
Shaved with it a few minutes ago for the First time and cant find the best words to describe my feelings, it was a perfect shave, no problems with the Size and much easier to handle as ive expected (the scales, although they had been made for a completly different razor, are very good balanced), i love this Razor :-)
I've found the same thing when I first used my big WB. It's a huge hunk of steel and you might almost expect it to be like shaving with a lawn mower blade but the opposite is true; the ease and gentleness makes smaller razors seem almost spiteful. ;)Quote:

Looking at the first set of photo's I would say half hollow definitely not full hollow.
I agree with you, on the First Pics it looks more half hollow, comparing it with my other Full and Extra Hollows i guess 1/2 to 3/4 Hollow would be a more realistic description of the Blade.
Mine has a similar grind but I doubt it has been re ground

I doubt too that it was re ground (just like mine).
I guess there was a Time in Sheffield when many Razors had been regrounded, maybe because of the invention of the Double Wheel Hollow Grinder? Maybe an Expert of the Sheffield History can answer the Question?
A lot were taken to the shop after the customer had the razor after it bacame popular and were reground hollow, others were probably old razors they had in back stock that were not selling because heavy wedges were no longer the new thing I'm guessing. Damage could also be fixed by narrowing and regrinding as well I assume. I have also run into Shorty blades where the blade was shortened and repaired and were obviously repaired long ago. More cost efficient back then to have a blade reground vs buying a new hollow ground blade.
Here's my Wade and Butcher, 9/8 Chopper, it's all original, notice it has a thumb notch, so it was either a custom order, or some variant. The "story" I was told that usually a custom order may have the name of the customer on it, no name on this, or it may have not been picked up? Either way, the thumb notch is original, it has a smiling blade, and there were no etchings on the blade. Needless to say, it was a nice find, and delivers a supreme shave. It's pre-1891.
