Another Wade and Butcher thread.

Found these at an antique shop yesterday and couldn't find them in the wiki or in any posts. What I do know is they lack the word England which makes them early production razors but that's it. ANY info would be great.

The black scaled razor:
Blade: Wade & Butcher Extra Hollow Ground
Tang: Manufactured by Wade and Butcher Sheffield
Size: Cutting edge: Bang on 3 inches. Width: 13/16

Blonde horned razor:
Blade: no markings
Tang: Wade and Butcher Sheffield
Size: Cutting edge From shoulder to point, 2 and 15/16 Width: smiling 11/16.

I was looking through about a dozen razors the guy had and he saw me checking out the blade and said "you must really know what you're looking for". I wouldn't have bought them if I didn't then I could get them shaving. There were a few other mediocre razors at 4/8 and 3/8 with familiar names in ok condition that i passed on.

The cool thing about these is that they're both basically shaving!

Brooksie, is the blonde one quarter hollow? I have one very similar on my work bench waiting for some new scales. Nice score btw!

You could call it that. quarter hollow/near wedge ish.

The one with the etched blade appears to be a later model, say 1880's. the other appears older but not early as far as W&Bs go. The tang stamp on the one with the honey horn handle its a deep stamping that indicates its earlier as they progressed toward mainly etching tangs later on. I would say the inclusion of the arrow logo how ever usually indicates it is not as old as some as W&B used that logo typically later in production, lets say mid 1870's. this is just based on my findings and razors I own with provanounce.

When/if I ever find a 7/8 or 8/8 or bigger, then I'll get it! These, to me, are pretty run of the mill ,no?

Idk, Im a sucker for vintage English steel is all. Im quite jealous of your find though. I wish we had more good vintage blades like that here.

There are a few more that I saw in the area but the lady wanted too much... Big vintage WB's too, we're talking 7/8 minimum. I just can't afford the $200 a piece she wants for them! Maybe if I stop selling my stuff and buying more stuff on this site I'll be able to save up and get them some day!

The 1890 maker's country stamp does not work Absolutley..

If it has a stamp it is "Probably" post 1890 and was exported, now if the razor was made post 1890 but not exported it doesn't have to have a stamp..

There are also early razors that have Country stamps, maybe just because they were proud of the razor..

As usual there are no real "Carved in Stone" rules in this sport

I have one that is a very near twin to the one in black here. *However* the one difference is on the tang. Mine reads "Manufactured by Wade & Butcher Sheffield England" with the arrow & cross. Since the styles are otherwise almost identical, I wonder if that dates mine to early 1890s and yours late 1880s?

This was actually my first ever attempt at re-scaling, and I cringe every time I look at those pins. I really need to redo that one of these days...

Nearly the exact same dimensions as yours. 6/8" width, 3" cutting edge. So just a shade narrower.

Mine looks to have some pretty extensive hone wear so i'm thinking it was probably 7/8 before?

Mine has hardly any at all, so I don't think it was ever much larger than it is now. I've noticed the grind is a bit different at the heel end, so maybe they are not quite twins, but bros separated by a few years. :)

Mine is just a little feller, 5/8.
