New Mastro Livi CarboInox patterns and scales
This story started in the beginning of June 2016 when I went to Mastro Livi's laboratory. With my total surprise, Mastro Livi was working on something new - he is always experimenting new damascus, techniques and steels - and, in particular, he was grinding a CarboInox blade. He said it was a new pattern and this would have been revealed only at the end of the coloring process. He mentioned this pattern was special because it was a CarboInox with a stripes pattern. He said he combined martensitic stainless steel and carbon steel (CarboInox is a damascus made by assembling this two types of steel) and this process has been quite difficult and required a lot of time at the forge. He also said he wanted to start a new series of straight razor scales dedicated to the countries of the world, in particular he was thinking about an insert in the scales recalling the flags of each country. For this very blade, he wanted to add a USA flag insert, something he already had made by the time I arrived at his laboratory. The final result of this razor Mastro Livi made at the beginning of June is visible in the pictures I attached to this report, in particular, it is the straight razor with a CarboInox with stripes pattern and scales with a round tip in which you see the USA flag. That was absolutely magnificent and stunning!
It took me very little time to ask him to make a razor like this for me and having the Italian flag. However I also asked him if he could make another CarboInox razor with a USA flag, as I lived in this country in the past and I liked the idea of having two CarboInox razors with the flags of those two countries.
Yesterday I went to Mastro Livi's workshop because he phoned me in the morning and told me he finished making the two razors and they were finally waiting for me to go there and pick them up.
It was also the occasion to take some pictures of Mastro Livi showing his latest masterpieces and, of course, the two razors I brought home with me.
To me, Mastro Livi is a genius, not only a superlative artisan, arsist and craftsman, but also a genius, unequaled genius when it comes to straight razors. Not just for the fact he has been successful in combining martensitic stainless steel and carbon steel together (it seems this is something quite hard to achieve by using genuine artisan methods only) but also for the latest pattern he has been successful in creating for his CarboInox. This stripes pattern simply is breathtaking, something mesmerizing you would never stop admiring, both for its beauty and the technical achievement. All handmade, all handmade by an Italian artisan, all handmade by a great Italian craftsman. Moreover, this is something - as far as I can tell - I have never seen in other razors, knives or cutting tools of any kind. To me, Mastro Livi is an unequaled talent both in straight razor making and damascus making.
And I am very happy to be the owner of these two masterpieces he made for me. Mastro Livi is the highest expression of Italian pride and "made in Italy".
