Hello collegues,
I have ordered a razor but still not sure about the origin of it.

Is it WR (1830-1837) Rodgers &Sons from Sheffield or is it something else?
Seller assumes the handle was replaced and made from plastic. Also seller rescaled the razor itself and sharpened it for the first time.
Any ideas about the origin of this buddy? I have never seen that hallmark before (Universally approved)

Welcome to SRP. I see nothing on the tang of the razor to indicate it is a Joseph Rodgers. The W-R is a regent stamp which can date it. Universally Approved rings a bell in my memory but I can't place it right now. Someone may be along who can give more info on who the maker might have been. :gl:

The WR stamped on your razor shows that it was made during the reign of King William IV who was king of England between 1820 and 1837.
WR [sovereign's Duty Mark] = William IV (1820-1837)

Universally approved was stamped on razors across a large number of makers around that time and later. I don't recall if it was something special or just a selling point slogan though.

Walt, as far as I know "W crown R" means 1830-1837 and yes, SienceGuy, I agree with you, "Universally Approved" is a very common stamp.
So, I still guessing Who made my razor.
This blade has been reground hollow. My guess is the maker's mark was stamped on the blade face and got ground off. This kind of stamping was fairly common with Greaves, but I have seen some Rodgers and Joseph Elliot with the maker mark on the blade as well.Quote:

On razors of this sort, the maker's stamp was usually on the spine, near the middle...

But yours has been reground, and that stamp was lost, it was definitely rescaled as well. Mine was too, but the scales on mine were patterned after the originals.
And while I'm mostly sure it was Wade & Butcher, it could easily have been made by the same workers for another maker, or for a merchant, or just because one of the foremen was behind on his rent and he needed to sell some piecework.
I would say they are look the same! What is the material the handle is made from?

The handle is horn, but it was remade based on the shape of the old one (which was also horn, but badly cracked).Quote:
