My Great-Great-Great-Grandfather's razor

I along with just about every one else on this board have spent countless money on incredible old razors... Some nicer and more rare and desirable then the ones posted, others tragically in a more dire condition of disarray or common-blade....

You have something 95% of us don't. An original family heirloom that is at least 150 years old. This is not something that can be bought... You either have it or don't...

once in my life i seeing razor so old in good condition like this. this is second one i seeing. congratulations.

With their history these razors are indeed priceless and i would not sell them for any price......almost any price. I would however like to get them restored to the best condition possible. The mgreaves is still holding together great but needs to be cleaned really thoroughly, sanded and sealed or w/e u do to horn. The dixie is clean but has loose pins. The desco is guna be my guinea pig. I would send them out to get them restored by a pro but im very wary about sending my 150+ yr razor anywhere at all.

Can anyone recommend a trusted craftsman? Has anyone had or done restorations like this in the past with good results?

Lookup mycarver . His work is amazing.

There are many talented people here who do restorations for others. Check the classified adds or look in the workshop for recent restorations and shoot who ever you find to do good work a PM for details... I do my own restorations, and I feel some of people out there are weiry of restoring heirlooms since they are irreplaceable. There is always an inherent risk of damage to the scales in particular when unpinning and restoring 150+ year old material... There are vendors ho will take on the job though, and you will get what you pay for.

I can understand you being reluctant to send your old family heirloom out to a stranger but IMO the people you will typically deal with here are generally trustworthy people. I think the greater risk is in sending it in the mail. Make sure to insure it both ways for an amount that if it gets lost you at least feel like you weren't robbed.

I've Trusted Glen (GSSIXGUN) with my great grandfathers razor, my son's 8/8 friodur and many others!

Here's the link within his website about vintage restorations, the first paragraph says it all!! If you want that blade back to as close as it can be, then Glen is your man!!
