My eyes always light up when I see big, smiling wedges and I love the way their mass feels in hand. Likewise, they have a certain momentum that smaller, lighter grinds can't duplicate.
Yet, the slim, hollow grinds that sing, give such a good shave.
I know.. don't try to decide, have an assortment of both. Indeed.
That's all... back to regularly scheduled programming.

Same here. The Wostie wedge is a great blade but so are some of my full hollow grounds such as the Fredrick Reynolds.

You can have the best of both worlds,are plenty of brutes that are not wedges:)

Man, that 10/8 JR is the perfect example of a big old hollow razor. Gotta love shaving almost the entire side of your face before needing a rinse!Quote:

Me, I like big near wedges, and the bigger, the better. I'm selling off all my large-bladed hollows. There is nothing wrong with them at all. I just like more weight and less noise.

I've only just started SR shaving with my Dovo, now I have I feel I would prefer something heavier!
Any recommendations, hints, makers names or is it just a lucky find when you do?

Find a mentor in your area or check the posts on threads for people nearby to you. Contact them. Straights are all different and being able to talk and question as the thought pops in is great.Quote:

My rotation is all Ducks and I love the shaves I get from them, but I was working my way up the grits on this just before I came in here to rest my fingers. This is the first of 5 big blades I am dying to try.

If the silhouette in the barbers notch is any indication of how it is going to feel on my face I am in for a treat.
It's not a crack . It's on both sides and looks like it was made at the time of the notch. My notch has a nipple ?

regarding the origanal poste, it is not how big your razor is, it's what you do with it. Oh yeah, it also depends on your facial geometry. My cheeks love the big blade but my neck, not so much
I have from 4/8 to 15/16. I like a 6/8 round hollow. They all shave the same but I will settle on that. I have quite a few spikes but the tip is always muted. Never got used to it, and hazardous on the neck IMO.
Variety is the spice of life. That saying is so true. Its nice to mix it up. I have plenty of razors but my eyes light up when i see a big blade.
Mine, too. Still, experience has proved my eyes to be bigger than my stomach -- translation: those big blades were too big for me to comforably/fearlessly shave my upper lip. As I've written before, I found the best blend of weight, size, and grind to be a 5/8"-6/8" blade size, in a 1/4- to 1/2-hollow grind... with either a French (oblique) or round tip. I trade you one of your big hollow grinds for a near 8/8 John Shaw celebrated razor.
I much prefer blades that are 4/8 and hollow ground. I still shave with bigger and heavier blades for the variety, but when I need a really great shave, it's a 4/8 hollow for me.
As an added bonus, with so many people drooling over the big blades on eBay, there are great deals to be had on the smaller ones.
I've never enjoyed anything under 5/8. I've never used anything larger than 13/16, but I'm sure I'd like it. I like all grinds except wedges. The size doesn't really affect my shave. Variety is the spice of life.
