Need help id'ing a razor
Just go my first straight from Larry at whipped dog..it was a sight unseen an sit have just unwrapped it, so I haven't shaved with it yet, and since this will be my first shave it will be shortbread.. The razor says GSG special on the blade and GS Grant on the tang. It also says Sheffield below G S Grant on the tang
anybody have any info on it? I'm not really concerned about the value and it really doesn't look bad, I'm just curious

I was afraid someone would ask. If I can find an 8 year old I'll see if I can post a pic

A razor sold by Grant, a cutler in Preston. The maker is a different story, in all probability. Anything on the backside tang?

Well, someone will have to come up with the missing part, City/state/country would be nice. I think somewhere in England!

The razor was made and ground in Sheffield, as it says on the blade, and the retailer was George S Grant who had a premises at 56 Fishgate, Preston, Lancashire.
He is recorded in Kelly's 1905 Directory:

It seems he sold/made many items and was the successor to G. B. Read's business:

The trade advertisement above makes mention of the very razor in question at the princely sum of 4/6 - 22 and a half pennies in new money!
He is often mis-named "C S Grant" due to the signwriting on his shop:

The picture above is a postcard - the other half is clearly printed with his name in a bold, sloping logo: G. S. Grant, so there is no mistake, just sloppy signwriting.

Neil
