I tried a bit of Gawith and Hogarth Dark Cherry Twist in a small Meerschaum. Not at all bad, in fact very tasty. From all of the reviews I was expecting a massive nicotine assault, but not at all.

I think on a briar it's more of an aesthetic and a maintenance issue. I suppose it could be a smokeability issue if you are burning the rim to the point you are smoking briar along with your tobacco....

I think you're on the right track. Lightly tamping the tobacco/ ash throughout the smoke really seems to help, and gently sipping the smoke rather than long heavy draws keeps the smoke cooler as well.
