Hmm... not a bad shave. The Korres moisturising I used as an after shave wasn't a bad idea, but not perfect. Felt quite comfortable, no scent clash. Still looking for the ideal non-alcoholic after-shave accompaniment to Tabac soap.

Omega Boar
C&E Sweet Almond Oil ss (TY Craig)
Thayers Original WH w/aloe
Murray & Lanman Florida Water (yowch!)
Moving slowly into my straight razor shaving, I am feeling slightly more comfortable on the first pass WTG...the C&E almond soap is very agreeable with a subtle scent and good lather...I felt some irritation after the second pass with the Balck Tip and Gillette "Swede" combination...this blade may not be my cup of tea...we'll see...

Your approach is the same as mine was. I shaved with a combination straight DE until I was able to comfortably shave my cheeks, lip & chin (WTG/XTG/ATG) then ventured slowly down my neck. Once my hands figured out what to do, I put the DE down and never looked back.
The hardest part was getting my brain and hands to work as a team.

Result: After using the Wostie which had been re-honed to a higher degree, I decided to try the W&B which hadn't, to see if the issue was technique or blade sharpness. IMHO, it's blade sharpness. I know I'm a rookie to straight razor shaving, but I think my stubble is just that stubborn. I know it is with DE blades. Anyways, so I finished with the Wostie, and a few touch ups with the Slim - I was starting to get burn as my frustration level was rising....

Result: Very nice shave today. I like the Ingrams, it was my first time with it. Good stuff. I also tried the "crackstar method" of dabbing the cream on my face and then working that into a lather. The first pass was awesome, the 2nd OK, and I barely had enough left for the 3rd pass. So I'll use a little more next time. First time with the Pitralon, too. I really like that, also. After a day off from shaving, a decent first pass with the straight and a very nice second and third pass with the Black Tip. No irritation from the "Swede" today...perhaps after a few shaves it calms down for me...I am still struggling with stropping and I left another nick at the bottom of the strop (ARGHHHH!!!) despite my caution...otherwise, a fine way to start the day

Really nice shave today, I need to concentrate more on making all my shaves this enjoyable. I tend to spend too much time with what end up being IMO inferior products. My goal the rest of the year is to get rid of anything that I don't thoroughly enjoy using.

Result: A little burn showed up later in the day...but a successful 2 pass "good enough for work" shave. I'm slowly getting the hang of this straight razor thing....slowly.
I've always liked those Penworks brushes for the style. How do you like the performance? Their Gemstone Line is definitely something unique, and I may have to add one soon. I've always been unsure of their knots.
One small tip for razor burn. Use your best soap and cream when learning the straight. They will offer you the most protection when you struggle with the angle, pressure or excessive passes. I only used my top soap and top cream until I was comfortable and it did help.
Dave
You know, sometimes some things are so obvious you totally overlook them....thanks for bringing me back Dave. Recently I've been acquiring quite the collection of soaps, creams, and aftershaves....maybe it's time to pick one and stick with it. :gaah:
I only have two brushes, the Penchetta and a NOS Ever Ready boar. I tell you though, I had the Penchetta for the longest time and never wanted to get into trying out other brushes. For me it works great on both creams and soaps, with very little shedding when new and not much "breaking in" required. I would highly recommend it, and I know a lot of other people who have been happy with both their Penchetta brushes and their Golden Nib knot re-knotted brushes. HTH
