    Default New to DE shaving

Firstly I would like to say that I am new to using a DE Razor. My hubby (exile182) after getting into straight razors, bought me my first DE razor about a month ago. I finally took up the courage to finally use it last weekend. I have to admit that I had experience mixed emotions, fear and excitement mainly. My fear was that after 14 years of using a regular razor that you would buy at a supermarket, I would cut myself badly. However, I was really surprised by two points, one being that although my hands were shaking like hell, I managed not to nick my self (to which using the standard every razor like everyone else, I would cut myself in every shave in several spots) and two, the closest shave I have ever experienced. It felt like I was wearing some else's legs! After the success I experienced while shaving my legs with my new DE, I decided to build up the courage to shave under my arms. This area I hated shaving as during every shave, I would nick myself due the dips of the armpit. I managed again to not cut myself in this area, talk about happy! I did my second shave tonight, which to my disappoint was not as successful as my last, a couple of nicks here and there...perhaps it was due to being over confident from my first shave, a mistake I won't be making again. One thing I couldn't bring myself to was to shave my downstairs area...I am yet to build enough courage to attempt this kind of shaving.

Good to hear about your success! I convinced my girlfriend to try a DE several months ago and she has never looked back. She shaves everything, including her downstairs area (). She did find that her skin likes some razor blades better than others, and it could be useful for you to buy a sample pack somewhere and experiment a little.

Good luck and take it slowly, it takes some time to master speed

Thank you for your kind words and advice, I really appreciate it. The blade that is in my DE at the moment seems to be okay, so far I have not experienced any irritation like I normally would with the standards razors, but in saying that I would be interested in trying other blades to compare. Would have any idea where I might be able to get hold of a sample pack of blades?

You're welcome I got a sample pack from a friend, but my girlfriend stuck with the first brand she tried. There are quite a few options out there when you look for something like "DE razor blade sample pack".

Here are a few general notes:
    - Feather blades are the sharpest and too sharp for many people. I would advise against using them, unless you feel you would benefit from a much sharper blade than you have now.
    - Blade price says little to nothing about the performance.
    - The first time you use a blade, it often feels a little harsh. This can be overcome by "corking" it: drawing the edges lightly over a cork or styrofoam in both directions, once should do.
    - Derby blades are less harsh than most other brands, and they are dirt cheap.
    - But most importantly: it's personal preference. I like Derby blades, my girlfriend does not.

I would check West Coast Shaving. They have a tons of blades and sample blade packs. It maybe easier to buy based off reviews and buy a handful of different blades instead of a sampler from them. Also I would trust them more than the bay, just my 2 cents. Also they have tons of soaps and creams.

If you order you can let them know your a lady and ask for some free samples and they may send you some extras as well. Last shipment I received several sampler creams on top of my order to try out which was really nice. On my next order I plan on buying some coconut cream from Truefitt & Hill the sample they sent me was amazing!

You can look on eBay for the vintage lady Gillette, there is a blue and pink one. The pink one is much harder to come by.

Hey, I have a Weishie (sp) which we picked up from our local barber shop and only paid about $30 - i love it, its the only thing i use now and is so much cheaper than the standard razors you buy at the super market and it doesnt irritate my sensitive skin

I bought my girlfriend this Golf DE: Barbershop Classics The Shaving Shop. Less than 10 euros, much lighter than most others and she loves it. She tried a Gillette later on and did not like that, too heavy for her taste.
    I want a lather whip
