I'm a big fan of Pawn Stars, but I'm afraid this razor is going to be bought by guys that are unschooled in wetshaving. Guys are gonna get this razor, without knowing about proper prep, they're gonna use canned cream, and they will not know proper wetshaving technique. I imagine most buyers of this razor will try it a few times, then set it away and say "never again". I hope I'm wrong.

My dad has been trying to get away from expensive cartridge razors and wanted to get an old school DE razor. So he bought a Muhel R89 and said he hated it and gave it to me. Then out of the blue, my father told me that he ordered a razor from from a TV commercial with that guy from Pawn Stars. My father said it reminded him of the old Gillettes he used to own. I told my father that he should have mentioned it to me because I could find those on Ebay. My father is not a computer person so that thought never entered his mind. So when he ordered this razor over the phone, the sales person told him that he needed to order the blades since they were specific to this razor. Immediately I though what a scam. So I went searching for an old Gillette for him without his knowledge. I ended up buying 2 off of Ebay a Gillete Flare tip and a Gillette slim adjustable. I also ordered over 200 blades from different makers like feather, Gillette ect... I received this before his Pawn Stars Razor even shipped. We know this because the day I received the Gillettes in the mail and gave them to him, he called about the Pawn stars razor order. He was going to cancel it but my father is old school and said he committed to something he'll just us this as a learning lesson. I told him that i would be curious to see the quality of the Pawn Star razor. About 2 weeks after I had given my father the gillettes his Pawn star razor arrived. The first thing I did was to check if it could use any DE blade and it does. In fact the blades that shipped with it were dorcos. The razor has the same feel as the gillette as far as weight. It actually felt like a quality made razor but Im not sure what the material is or how well it will hold up over use and abuse.

But as far as shaving with it i couldn't tell you my father is still evaluating it. Each day when I ask my father which razor he likes best the Pawn Star, the Flare tip or the adjustable, the answer is always the same: The Gillette adjustable on number 4!

I just saw the commercial for the 1st time yesterday. I'm glad to see he likes the DE(ifn that isn't a gimmick).

Personally, though, I'd rather pick up one or three from an 'tique store or SRP or 'bay.

A big BUT here. BUT, I never would have really know anything about anything had I never found SRP after getting tickled regarding straight razor shaving.

Just curious. I've been using my Parker refillable straight for a few years now and totally love it. I use the Shark brand 1/2 razors and occasionally will switch over to using a Derby razor for a change. The advice I got here was priceless. I hung with it, and now I can shave with a straight and have about five years worth of razors which I got for a song off of ebay.
However, I've been meaning to try a DE holder for a while now. I saw this commercial on TV and thought it was a bit much, but then found out I can pick this exact kit up at a local Wal Mart for $20 (no shipping and don't have to buy the extra blades).
Is this razor worth $20, or should I just bit the figurative bullet and shell out $35 for a nice Parker 96 on eBay?
My kids were looking for something to get me for Father's Day and I told my wife she could let them "surprise" me with this.

p.s. Follow up question: can the DE holders use the 1/2 blades, or do you have to use the whole DE blade for it to be held securely in place. It would be total awesomeness if my existing boxes of 1/2 blades would work in this holder.

I think in my personal opinion that you can do better than the tv DE. For not really much more money you can open up your choices to razors that you are actually going to enjoy. As far as the blades go, you cant use a half blade. The blade gets held in place an centered from the holes or slots machined into it. Half a blade wont have anything to hold on to. Good luck.

Thanks, RollinCoal. I wasn't sure on the 1/2 razors, but I still have a few full DE's left over from a sampler pack that will tide me over until I can buy a batch of Derby or Shark razors off of ebay.

I may still let my kids "surprise" me with the one from WalMart, then replace it with a better one when they aren't looking. We all watch Pawn Stars together and I think the "cool factor" of getting something like that without telling me about it before hand (ordering it online would require me knowing about it) with the star's picture on it is cool for them to do. Yeah...I know I'm paying a bit more for something, but sometimes Dads do that. I'm sure my Dad let me "surprise" him when I was much (much, much) younger.

Hello again, folks.

I wanted to post a follow up to my earlier posts. I know that this in an old subject, but I think that wet shaving and DE razors are making a "slow and steady" comeback. The razor that was branded as the OneRazor piqued my interest, as I'm not big on shelling out a lot of money ($40 is a lot of money to me) on something that I'm not sure I will like. I have no problem saving up and spending the money once I know it's a good investment, though.

A quick note on me: I started shaving with a Parker shavette (replaceable blade straight razor) several years back. I loved the cost and that it actually slowed me down while shaving to help me get a better shave. I liked that I could adjust the angle of my shave and I had full control of the blade (and I didn't just take mindless slashes at my beard like I had with disposables).

I did some research and found out through this forum that the "OneRazor" being sponsored by Rick from "Pawn Stars" was the Weishi razor rebranded. I did a bit more comparing and found another one that from all appearances was exactly the same razor for a bit less (although the Weishi isn't expensive by any stretch of the imagination).
My main limiting factor was that I had received an unexpected $25 gift certificate to Amazon...so I set off to find the best deal that I could get without going over $25.00 (including shipping).

The "Anbana New Classic". From all appearances it was an exact clone (if not the same razor) of the Weishi (which we know is the OneRazor). Therefore, I got that razor and a pack of 50 Shark SuperChrome DE razors (Amazon.com: 50 SHARK SUPER CHROME DOUBLE EDGE SAFETY RAZOR BLADES: Health & Personal Care). Having tried about 10 different brands of blades, I found that using the 1/2 blade Shark razors are my favorites (with Derby a very very close second). Between the two items, I paid just over $21.00 after shipping. Perfect. That left me a few dollars to get some MP3s, so I got a copy of "Bad to the Bone" by George Thorogood & The Destroyers with the leftover $$$.

Fast forward four days and the items arrive at my house. Again...I'm cheap and went with free shipping.

I examined the razor. The case was plastic, but sturdy (exactly like the OneRazor case I saw in the reviews). The razor was surprisingly hefty for a short handle. I had only shaved once with a safety razor that my uncle had when I was about 15 years old. His was a classic razor and I know it had a long handle on it, but the one I had now was respectably heavy and felt good in my hand. I checked it out to make sure it functioned smoothly...no problems. Having watched a couple of prep videos and having the experience with the straight razor, I was anxious to try it out.

I loaded the razor, closed it on the blade and made sure it was secure. After lathering up, I tried it out.

Within seconds, I had found my new favorite way of shaving. It was smooth, easy, and I was able to use little (if any) pressure on the handle and got a very very good shave. I was able to easily handle it and I now know that this will be my default way of shaving, with my straight razor still making occasional guest appearances (I have a LOT of 1/2 blades to use up...about six boxes of 100). I was really pleased with the result.

Now...I know that there are better razors out there...this one is on my Amazon "wish list": Amazon.com: Parker 22R - Long Handle Butterfly Open Double Edge Safety Razor & 5 Shark Super Chrome Blades: Health & Personal Care. I know that Parker is probably the best mid-range quality and affordability DE razor handles out there from what I've read on the forum. Now I know that the investment will be worth it.

To talk a bit more about the OneRazor...ordering offline or from TV seems to be a ripoff. Too much for shipping and handling and all you get is the same deal I got...the razor in a small "travel case" with a tiny (all but useless) mirror. However...I hand-made a stand for my new razor and my brush from stiff wire (which came out surprisingly good). If you can find the OneRazor on a store shelf, it comes in a different package (clear plastic) and rather than the travel case, you get a decent wire stand for it (the stands go for about $15.00 on Amazon). If you've been thinking about trying it out...my thoughts are that it wouldn't be a bad deal if you get it off the store shelf (if you have a spare $20 and happen to find it at Target or WalMart).

Again...your mileage may vary, and I intend to upgrade to the Parker (this one will probably be my 14 year old son's first razor), but my experiences have been very positive based on usage and the initial amount of the investment.

I am working to convert others...I firmly believe that disposable plastic razors are a scam and cost way too much money for what you get.
