    Default New score!

I was at my grandparents today and got a couple old tto DEs. I can't see any branding on them but maybe you guys would know more about them. My grandfather said they are from the 40's and one was his fathers. They both appear to be the same razor. What would be the best way to clean them up? There's some crusty buildup from what I'd imagine to be soap or cream. I'm going to try to use some hot water with some vinegar mixed in and see if that breaks down the residue....if it works to remove residue from a brush then maybe it will work for this?

metal polish and a toohbrush works well. Then boil them for a bit to sterilize them. Rub em down a bit again and voila!!!

Great find,,,they look like Gillettes, after you clean them they will probably real a manufacturer on the bottom.
I would avoid the vinegar soak for now, a soaking with "Scrubbing Bubbles" in the green bottle for 5-8 minutes, warm water rinse, a soft toothbrush with liquid bacterial dish soap to scrub, drop a little mineral oil down the handle to lube the rotation,,,,,if your still concerned about the hygiene of it,,, then a 10 minute soak in Barbicide mixture or 2 minutes in a cup of rubbing alcohol,,,warm rinse,,,then put the mineral oil on it & down the handle, wipe off the excess mineral oil.

    Update!

I used some vinegar water, dish soap and a scrubby brush and they cleaned up really nice! I'll use a bit of mother's polish to shine them up.

I looked at the bottom and they are both Gillette razors, one was made in the USA and the other was made in England. Anyone know what models they might be? Or which one is older based on where they were made?

Didn't have scrubbing bubbles, they didn't sit for very long in the vinegar water...just a min or two to loosen up the buildup, then dish soap.

I'm not too concerned with them having germs as they have just been sitting in my grandfather's drawer in the washroom. Would Wahl clipper oil work? Do I put the in the end with the head or in the bottle of the handle?

Use Mothers if you want; on the DE Gillettes I use Colgate toothpaste (white regular), instead of Mothers, it's m not as abrasive & really brings out a decent shine & no need to worry about any left over Mothers on the razor,,,don't get me wrong I love Mothers, use it on dang near everything else.

It will work,,,a few drops down the open head, sit for a few minutes, then open & close a few times.

Ah, I think I'll pass on giving away family heirlooms? They look great now that they are cleaned up.
