Default New guy given several old DE's today ! (photos)

    Hello,

Was helping clean out my grandmothers Apt. today with my father and we came across 3 DE's and an old set of clippers and a few old blades!

2 are "rake" types? and one Butterfly.

Had a shower tonight and after reading countless beginner tips and watching many videos I gave the Silver DE a shot..
I was pretty timid in the beginning and took my time the whole way through and made a total of 3 passes.
My only problem area was the chin.. It was tugging quite a bit and even some flat spots it did this as well.

Could this be the old blades I decided to go ahead and use? they looked perfect..
Either way, I was still pretty satisfied with my first DE shave and didn't have one nick/cut.

Yep! Get some new blades! I'd get a few different brands to try! I haven't DE shaved in 8 months but Feathers are my favorite!

Those are pretty sweet! Have you tried the clippers yet?

    Thanks for the replies!

I'll get a variety pack ordered very soon, and in the meantime i'll also be trying a new DOVO SR thats arriving in 2 days..
Would like to be proficient at both SR and DE especially where I have inherited each kind of razor.

As for the clippers... No.. haha.

I shave my head with electric clippers and have no hair to try them on. Before today I had never seen anything like them and didn't know there was such a thing!

Maybe when the wife comes home ??

Congrats! Even more special since they are family heirlooms. The 3 DE's should clean up nicely. All three are great razors.

Back in the 1950s and before that's how barbers cut your hair. Probably in the late 1950s barbers were increasingly using electric models.

    > "rake" types?

You mean that one on the left in your picture? I think I've heard those called "open comb". If you do a search for that phrase here (and at Badger and Blade, where DEs are discussed more), you should find some conversations about why some users prefer closed or open comb designs.

    Congratulations on your good fortune!
    Keep your pivot dry!
