It needs a little cleanup but other than that it's in nice shape. My question is how different is this over my Gillette slim, other than adjustability. Any advise for my first shave with this. Also any advice on blades?

Congrats on the GEM Junior, I have one but have not used it yet, successfully,,,but someone will come along eventually & give you the scoop on it.
I have been using a Gem Micromatic for a while as my left arm is in a sling temporarily.
I find it has a totally different handle angle. A different approach, radically different!
Try different blade angles. You actually must press in a bit to make them work as I have experienced. The shave is very good with cheap blades from CVS, but I want to get some good, stainless ones. Who has the good stock these days?

For a DE for the kiddo I highly recommend a Gillette slim adjustable.

I love my straights as well, but I like the DE for those time when I don't have time for a full 3 pass shave or don't need a BBS shave and want to cut down the whiskers. They also will give you a great 3 pass shave as well.
@pfries I just use the persona from Walmart, but there are better blades out there. SRD has a great selection. I have used the Gillette 7 o'clock and they are fantastic. The persona's I only get 2 full shaves out of them myself but they get the job done pretty well.
