Default My new old peace of family history!

I went to visit my Great Grandmother today and as I was telling her about my new found hobby of SR and DE shaving, she started to search her house and found my Great Grandfather's razor. The only thing that I know about it, is that it's a Gillette. Any info on it would be much appreciated. Also any tips on cleaning it up a bit? Anyways just thought I would share this with you guys! Thanks for looking!

What you have there is a "flare tip" Super Speed. IIRC it would have been started in the mid 1950s, but maybe '60s. A fine DE to shave with, as most of Gillettes were.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

I agree with Jimmyhad, looks like a superspeed, if that's a D3 on the bottom that should be a 3rd quarter of 1958. To lightly clean the old gillettes I have, I use a touch of dawn dish soap and some water, let it soak a little while then use an old toothbrush to see if the little bit of gunk will come off. Any further than that I have no idea what the guys do that restore them.

You can find info here on Gillette safety razors RENALDO.US - Gillette Razor and Blade Dating and Feature Information and you can probably get the year and in which quarter of that year it was made from the date code on your razor. Those TTO/Tech head razors are nice smooth shavers and not overly aggressive. Yours was made post 1948 as it is notched for easy blade dispensing. Clean her up and give her a whirl.

Just had to check what I used last time to clean up a DE. Scrubbing Bubbles Bathroom Cleaner spray marked soap and scum remover. A few squirts of that, a soft tooth brush and some hot water should work nicely. Rinse thoroughly and dry it.

I think you got all the info on the razor it's self. But to clean I have always used a toothbrush ( manual ) and toothpaste always has worked for me.

Try a baking soda soak for about 30 minutes and then the toothbrush, etc, if needed.

    Kiel,
That Gillette flare tip is a delightful little razor. Yes, it is mild, but sweet nevertheless. I restored one for my wife and she loves it. Good stuff.
