Default "The modern version of a timeless classic!"

I haven't shaved with a DE razor since I was in high school...and
that was many moons ago. I'd been thinking about trying that again,
but I was reluctant to jump right in with the purchase of a fancy
new one. So, when I saw an ad on TV for a "kit" (razor, blades,
travel case) for "only" $19.99, "The modern version of a timeless
classic!", I took the bait. https://www.onerazor.com/

First of all, I should have known better about the "only" price.
After adding tax, shipping and handling charges, the total came to
$35.77. Fool that I am, I went for it anyway.

Well, the kit was delivered today and what I got was a bit of a
disappointment. I shudda known, right? The razor feels light (pot
metal?) and the mechanism seems rather loose. The razor comes in a
"handy" travel case, which is made of flimsy plastic, but it does
have a mirror on the inside of the lid: it's about an inch wide
and it isn't much good...unless your face is about an inch wide.

Also included in the deal are 24 "MicroTouch One Precision Blades".
That's what the outside of the package says anyway. Inside, the
blade wrapper says, "Dorco Platinum ST300 Stainless Blade."
    Made in China.

I thought about just sending the kit back for a refund, but that
would cost me $4.95 more for return postage, and I still would only
get a 19.99 refund...someday. Not worth it. "Gotcha, sucker!"

OK. Here it is then, like it or not, so I might as well give it a
try. I lathered up, put a blade in the razor, and went with a WTG
pass. The sideburn line was nice and clean, but edging around the
goatee was problematic, and whisker removal was only marginal. So,
I relathered and had a go at XTG/ATG, followed by a water only
    touch-up.

Initially, the shave felt OK...not great like with a straight...but
OK. Surprisingly enough, even after a 50-year lay-off from DEs,
I didn't cut myself. However, 2 hours later I could feel stubble
just about everywhere on my face. Not a good shave at all.

True: it was the first time in a long time; the equipment is not
first rate; and I probably shouldn't have bought the kit in the
first place. My bad. Maybe after reading this, you won't make the
    same mistake.

Awe man... I feel for you. That sucks. Of course a great deal of the shave will depend on the blades. If the razor is worth it, at least try it with some quality blades.

    Thanks for the heads-up.

I agree with earcutter. Maybe try some better DE blades to see if you get a better shave.

Thanks for the warning about this razor kit.

Try a different blade. It may make a big difference to the shave.

    Paul,

After viewing the ad promoting your razor as the eighth wonder of the shaving world, I suggest taking your loss and send the razor back on principle for a refund. Why ruin your double edge shaving experience? Get a good razor and good blades and try the shave again. You will be surprise in the difference. This razor resembles the Chinese-made Weishi — and that does not exactly win the fit and finish prize. Yours might even be made by the same people, I don't know.

You have an abundant choice of fine razors: Merkur, Edwin Jagger, Muhle, Weber, iKon, Tradere, Above the Tie, Joris and others. And there is always the wide range of the great vintage Gillette razors you might find here and there. As for quality razor blades, you have a wide choice. My preferred blades are: Polsiver Iridium (Super Iridium), Feather, Gillette 7 O'Clock SharpEdge (yellow pack), Perma Sharp Super and Personna (red).

Thanks, gents. I'll give the "Try a better blade" solution a go first. If that's a bust,
then I might as well return it, as Obie suggests, because I'd never use it again.

It serves me right for watching late-night tv and making an impulse buy.

I concur with this post 100%. Paul, you should send it back with a note about your disappointment. There are way too many vintage DE's out there for you to own and love when you are in the mood for a break from the SR to endure that kind of nonsense.

IMO, Rick should be ashamed of himself for allowing his name and his face to be used in conjunction with the sale of such a substandard product.

keep it as a bitter reminder, but do get a good one. I recently tried a de for the first time, I got the merkur progress, it is equal to any of my vintage straights. it makes me see how the de took over the razor market when they came out. (yes yes, I know, blasphemy and such)

This is the Rick Harrison (Pawn Star fame) version of a Weishi at an outrageous price. We all fall for stuff like that at one time or another.
