I started wet shaving with the Futur and to this day is one of my favorite razors. My son has it now and I miss it.

I have been using a E/J 89 DE for the last few weeks which was my first razor after getting rid of the cartridge blades, and that has been going well even getting some BBS shaves.
I did not really expect the Merkur to be that much different. How wrong I was, the shave was soooooooo much better than using the EJ 89. I only had it on a setting of 3 then 2 to get the feel of it and got a BBS shave with very little effort, a really great shave it made my day.
I like Merkur safety razors because they are more aggressive than others. I think that my explain why you were impressed with your shave.

Just a little update on the Merkur. I have used the razor quite a few times since my first post and I am getting a first class shave every time (DFS) and at the weekends a BBS. I have used 7 O;clock blades derby's and Astra as well as Feather with good results. I cannot use the feather's all the time as my skin won't take them every day. the build of the razor is outstanding I love the feel if it in my hand. I still use my E/J DE 89 and that is also a very fine razor, more so if I am short of time, the Merkur does require a little for time in my hands anyway.
I think the Merkur is worth the money, and having in your razor rotation.

I also have a Merkur and love it. Re: the Merkur blades, I'm with Scotishcaviar...they feel less "smooth" to me than Astra's, Feathers or Wilkinson (German made). But YMMV

I am a merkur guy but also love my vintage gillettes. The futur has been on my want list for a long time. Just always been a bit nervous of the snap on top. Anybody notice any issues with that? As far as blades Ive used so many different types an my personal preference is (don't shoot me) merkur blades LOL. I don't know why but I get the easiest, no irritation, dfs an bbs from them. I wont say they are better than feathers or any other blades. I just tend to get a very acceptable shave from them. My skin is extremely sensitive to technique an blade choice under my jaw line. The merkurs don't burn me up. Just my choice. The futur is still on the want list.

I traded for a Futur a few weeks ago and have used it the days I don't use a straight. It's extremely aggressive and very blade sensitive imo, but it produces very impressive results pass for pass. It's amazing to me so many guys start with this thing because of the look because this is by no means a beginner's razor. It could be genuinely dangerous the way the blade is out there.

If you are a bit weary........... Rub the hand you hold the razor in, and rub Alum block on those fingers. Works great for me.
