    Default New Gillette

Won an adjustable Gillette "Slim" on e-Bay the other day. Should be here in a few days. Can't wait to try it. What do you guys use to sterilize a used razor? I'm thinking of boiling it for about 5 minutes, then soaking in 91% Isopropyl for about an hour.

If you boil it or even seconds you will get water marks on the blade and distort your scales
Barbicide is recommended but only use it on the blade as can stain scales
possibly just the isopropyl may work also not sure on effect on scales etc
I think also I read that just being left for several weeks since last use, that most critters die off
    Saved,
    to shave another day.

Personally I would scrub it up really clean with a disinfecting hand soap and call it good, but the alcohol soak would make double sure that its disinfected.

You're talking about a safety razor correct?

I use a soak in Barbicide for 10 minutes, no more, no less. Give it a good clean up with an old toothbrush and toothpaste (works wonders), then give it a soak for 10 minutes.

If it is a straight, Substance gave you sound advice re: the water stains and scales.

    Chances are though, it's fine...

I'm not sure what the issue could be with a safety razor to require extensive disinfection. I would trust antibacterial hand soap with hot water, and MAYBE a dip in alcohol or Barbasol, if you have it. If not a quick water and chlorine bleach rinse and then a lot of pure running water to get it all off.

    I assume you're not using used, vintage blades...if so, I wouldn't.

Dish soap & a tooth brush & let it sit in a cup of mouthwash for 5 minutes , if you have no Barbicide.
If you have Scrubbing Bubbles, the foaming kind (non bleach) version, spray it all over, wait 2 minutes, water rinse, dish soap & it's good to go.

I went the dish soap and toothbrush, followed by scrubbing bubbles route. Good luck and we are expecting pics when you are done.

I use the dish soap, warm water, toothbrush method also. Depending on the gunk build up depends on the soak time an scrub work. Then as mentioned 10 min in barbecide rinse an load for shave. Good luck. My slim is one of my favs in the DE collection. Excellent shavers.

    Try this.............

Cleaning & Restoring Vintage Double Edge Razors:

Soak in hot, not boiling water with Dawn dish detergent until water cools. Scrub with tooth brush and rinse.
Spray with non-bleach Scrubbing Bubbles. Let sit until bubbles start to disappear. Scrub with toothbrush and rinse.
    Repeat if needed.
Apply Flitz or MAAS if additional polishing is needed. Buff with micro-fiber cloth.
Repeat Scrubbing Bubbles, rinse, dry with towel.
    Load blade and enjoy.

    Works for me.........
