Can you find out which of the 3 versions you are getting? They made changes to the head and top plate IIRC as they went but still called it the R41. I can't recall which was the most aggressive version off hand but I have the 2013 version which is the tamest one. Put in a Feather blade to see what it is all about.

I've been learning to shave with a traditional S.R. for the past couple of months. I also shave with the Feather Artisan shavette style straight razor.

Before I began my S.R. Journey I shaved with Merkur 39C, both 2011 and 2013 R41's. I get great shaves with my traditional SR. But there not as BBS as my R41 three pass shaves.

The biggest problem with a S.R. for me is doing a three pass shave and getting under my jawline ATG . It's difficult to get the blade in the proper position without cutting yourself. The point of a S.R. Will bite you quickly.

The point on the Feather Artisan isn't sharp like the point on a traditional S.R. I get can a BBS shave comparable To the R41 with this razor.

If you want to learn S.R. Shaving further down the road I suggest yo try a 2013 R41. This will get you accustomed to the aggressive cutting style of a traditional SR.

Learning to shave with a S.R. is an acquired learning skill. Learning to set bevels, hone, and strop is a very rewarding experience for me. Much more than shaving with a D.E. style razor.

I started my SR shaving about 7months ago.. started with a cheap nasty shavette just to see if i had the patience to learn the carft

Turns out i really liked it... bought Feather SS , honed my skills better, bought Dovo classic and Dovo Astrial plus stops etc ... then aquired a Weishi saftery razor and found it easier like you to finish under the jaw line ATG with a safety.

The hardest part of shaving is trying to figure out what weapon to use... as i really like using them all.

The 2011 R41 is the most aggressive modern DE style razor. There very difficult to find and sell for a premium price.

Is this a matter of close physical examination or are there mold marks that spell out which is which?

You would have to do a net search to find out what the differences are. IIRC the difference between the 2011 and 2013 model is that the top plate on the 2013 model is slightly wider exposing slightly less blade.
