Thread: Two Superspeeds

I found two Gillette Super Speeds last weekend. These were behind the counter with a mix of safety razors that were all in pretty rough shape. So far I have used soapy water, toothpaste, and scrubbing bubbles to clean them. The missing plating on one if the razors was obscured by gooey gunk.

My two questions are
1) Is it safe to use MAAS where the plating is still intact?
2) Is it possible to clean up the general dirty look between the grooves in the handle?

Great find! Not sure about MAAS on plating, I use it on loads of different materials with great results though. A toothbrush works great for getting into groves

I use Blue Magic on all of the Safety Razors I clean up. Have also used MASS (Blue Magic is cheaper). Should not remove any more plating.

Use Colgate regular white tooth paste with a toothbrush on all parts.


,,,,,,,,,you can polish the flat surface of the heads with Colgate on a cotton cloth, then wash off.

I used the razor with the brass showing a little while ago. It was a two pass shave with a fresh Personna Platinum blade. The TTO mechanism opened smooth and even. This old Gillette must be forgiving. My technique was sloppy and no nicks.

I like the build quality of those early model super speed TTOs, especially the cut knurling on the handles. They are forgiving mild shavers and enjoyable to use. I would go easy on whatever polish you wind up using on the plating as it is not too terribly thick. A tooth brush does work well on the hard to reach places. Enjoy your finds.
