First shave

Just had my first safety razor shave. I didn't use a shaving cream or soap, instead I've used a shaving foam. Used an Edwin Jagger 89DE Edwin Jagger DE Safety Razor, 'Extra Grip' Handle, Knurled Chrome and the Derby Extra blades that the razor came with. I did 2 passes(WTG and XTG). I thing that I did OK for my first time. No nicks, no cuts. Loved the sound that the blade was making but most of all loved how the blade glided over my face. Never had that feeling with a cartridge. Definitely like this a lot. Already have a brush. Silvertip 22 mm knot and 50 mm loft from Whipped Dog. Just didn't have any shaving cream at hand.

Sounds like it went very well. A good soap or cream will make a big difference too. I stared off with Proraso green shaving cream and it's still one of my favorites. Be sure that your facial hair is well hydrated(probably the most important step) and enjoy.

Congrats on getting that first shave out of the way. Getting used to your new tool can take time.

I've used that very razor and those blades, and you have a versatile tool there.

Work your way through those Derby blades and then see if you can get a small variety pack of blades (available from most online stores). Different blades suit different people.

Yep, the other posters are right. It takes time to learn and soap or cream will make a big difference. I started the other way around. I came from Can and Cartridge to whipping my cream from soap with a brush and still using the cartridge. I was very suprised how close the shave got and how soft my skin felt afterwards. It's even better when using an Safety Razor. Great stuff ahead for you. :-)

I always got a close shave with real soap and a cart. The problem was after about two or three shaves I looked like I was 14 yrs old again. The bumps on my chin were horrific and many. Took several days for them to heal and disappear.

If I cannot shave with a SR or a DE, then it was not to be. No more carts. YMMV
