I was curious to how the upkeep should be with my DE I just got. I will be shaving for the first time tonight and was curious if you clean it before the shave or just go for it, and after the shave what are the best ways to keep it clean?

If it's new, you should be fine. If it's used I usually polish it with Blue majic, a Tooth brush and tooth paste, rinse and sanitize in Barbicide, over kill probably but I feel better about it. As far as upkeep I do that when I change the blade, again I use tooth paste and tooth brush.
Trimmy72's advice is probably solid, but for what it's worth, I've used my Merkur 34C for 4 years, and I've never even thought to sanitize it. After my shave, I rinse it under hot water, then use an old cotton T-shirt to wipe it down, clean off the residue. Every few months or more, I'll take it apart and use a warm wet washcloth and clean off the buildup, mostly at the ends of the head. It's still shiny as heck, never polished with anything.
The Sanitizing part was strictly for a used shaver. I wouldn't worry about your own germs...
Thanks for the advice guys. Its new its a Edwin Jagger de89. So when I change the blade that's when I clean it? When I do not replace the blade just rinse it with hot water?
I hot water rinse after I use it and let it air dry. Wipe it down with a cloth once in a while if it starts looking nasty. Some guys seem to get a little OCD about cleaning safety razors, but they require very little maintenance.
I just rinse it after shaving. If I buy a vintage one I clean them with a toothbrush , pipe cleaner and then sanitize in marvicide

More good input.
Thanks for all the advice/tips guys.
