I have similar experiences with a DE and straights. At least I think, based on your description.
My shaves last longer, skin is smoother, less irritation and hair grows back in more consistent and even. That's how it seems to me.

The implement doesn't change your beard. Maybe with the other methods you were inconsistent so that's how your whiskers grew back.

Beard doesn't change, agreed. But, At least for me, the texture off my skin changed and the closeness and cleaness of the cut changed. Hair cut more even and cleaner would grow back more consistent seems logical.

When I shave with a DE or any safety razor the stubble 24 hours later seems more coarse or sharp than a straight razor shave.

This. Pickier, for lack of a better word.

I have noticed almost the same. Before I came back to "Wet Shaving" I used either a "Wet & Dry" Panasonic Re-chargable, I also had a Norelco Re-Chargable Razor. They both never gave me a decent shave. I went back to "Wet Shaving" started using Schick Extreme3 disposable Razors. Got a decent shave but never got a BBS Shave. I could pretty much two days, before I needed to shave again, I choose to shave everyday. I do find that it seems that my beard seems to be getting stiffer and being that way, I get a better shave by shaving daily, and I always use a Pre-Shave Oil. I also use Cold Water everyday when I shave. I get a better and closer shave that way.

I would guess at 2 things, 1- you are exfoliating your skin when you shave now. 2- you are more meticulus with your shave than you used to be.

This effect could be caused by the razor cutting the hairs at a slant instead of straight across. As the beard grows out the day after a straight/DE shave, what you are feeling is a fraction of the full circumference of the stubble.
I noticed the same effect back when I was in the Navy. For a while I used a Braun electric for my daily shave. By the end of the day my stubble felt like 80 grit sandpaper. If I wet shaved, it took a couple of days before the stubble felt as harsh.
