Thread: Mongoose Razor -Why?

Well, 24 hours since the shave and it's thumbs up. It definitely outshaved the DS-2 and every other DE I have including the R-41. It's not quite in straight territory but it's mighty close. Some more experience with it and we'll see if it improves.

I have the Feather in the folding and non folding SS & DX as well as the Mongoose. The Mongoose is easy to use and the blades are the same for all. I found that I needed a little time to get the right angle with the Mongoose but it does deliver a very good shave. I did not like the non folding Feather razors but the folding ones are pretty good. If you aren't into the stropping & honing the folding Feather is a good choice.

Lynn, now I don't feel guilty using my Mongoose instead of my straights knowing you go to the dark side once in awhile.

Given the extreme width of the Feather blades has anyone who has used it found the Mongoose awkward around the throat especially? My tastes are for a narrower blade around the apple, like a Schick injector, which yields a better east/west/east result than any other on my neck

I am not familiar with the Mongoose but I am a fan of the GEM MICROMATIC TTO open comb and clog proof SE razors, both of which look very similar to the Mongoose.
I would even stick my neck out in suggesting they are basically the same razor but you are going to pay a heck of a lot more for the Mongoose for what I would expect would be the same outcome.

Even though the Mongoose is large and very heavy it is well balanced and is surprisingly agile. Around the neck you just use the part of it you need in tight areas. When I had the Pils DE I found it very clumsy to use even though it's much smaller than the mongoose. It has terrible balance and very poor design where form totally trumped function.

Gentlemen, For what it's worth, I've been using a Mongoose for just over six months, and am quite pleased. It took a while to get used to it, but once things settled down, I was able to get a bbs in two passes, plus a bit of cleanup using either a Feather Pro Super or, when the Super's too much, switching to a Kai Mild--those two blades representing the opposite ends of the spectrum with the Feather Pro being a nice middle ground.) The thing to remember, as some have pointed out before, is to use very light pressure and allow the razor to do the work. The other thing I've found is that both Feather and Kai will occasionally produce a substandard blade; so if you find your "goose" is irritating you, replacing the blade often solves the problem.
