Gillette Info Needed.

So I dragged the wife out to a few garage sales that mentioned "vintage" and the likes in their posting in the local classifieds. Maybe I'll do a modest "haul" post covering the goodies... for now, I need help nailing down more exacting information on a razor I picked up.

My research points to it being a Gillette Tech travel safety razor. Manufactured in the third quarter of either 1940 or 1965.

The lady I bought it from was well into retirement age, and said it belonged to her father-in-law. She said it was not in perfect condition, but NEVER used. "Pics or it didn't happen!"...

The under-bits... date code is "K 3".

And yes: that is the original bit of cardstock paper between the two head pieces that has "Mfg. By... ...replace with blade before use" or somethin like that... I guess I didn't grab a pic of that lol.

It's basically NOS, so I doubt I will use it. Not that it will replace my affinity for SRs.

This will make an appearance in the haul thread I post in "Show & Tell". The purpose of this thread was to get further information on this razor.

Once I narrowed down the above details, any further clarification was much more convoluted to come by. It was very difficult to find definitive classification of what year/variant model of Tech I've got ahold of :thinking:.

Comparing mine against Outback's, I think mine is older. By how much, I have no idea... yet. I'm just extremely curious, and feel a major need to KNOW the origin details of it, if possible.

Far as I can tell it is a cased travel tech made 3rd quarter 1965 as date codes were not used before 1950 according to RENALDO.US - Gillette Razor and Blade Dating and Feature Information . Nice find.

Hmmm. I didn't notice the note about no date code on razors before 1950. I saw the recycled date codes, and didn't put two & two together about them being on the blades lol. I was trying to sift through a lot of information (unexpected surprise!) in a short amount of time. Thanks for that!

Confirmed: Gillette Tech travel safety razor, circa 1965.

And like that show "Lost" (thankfully never saw), one answer only lead to more questions! According to the Gillette date code charts, the blades in my kit are older than the frackin razor! Lol. According to the charts, that particular pack of blades was produced between 1946 & 1960. The mystery continues!! :gaah::gaah:

I am sure you can still find those blades kicking around the web even today. Even if they stopped making those particular blades in 1960 there could have been enough in the supply chain to be still sold in 1965.

Beautiful set. It'll be hard to resist the urge to use it, I know I would! BobH hit the nail on the head here.

I'd use it....but then I'm a user not a saver (could be a song title). My curiosity doesn't let me save things....and 1965 was within a year or two of when I began shaving.
