Got a Merkur Futur for Christmas!
Congratulations.
It looks like you're in for some great shaving experiences.
I love mine. Congrats.
Remember one rule, NO PRESSURE!!!
Congrats on getting one! I have not tried one, but I really enjoy agressive razors. And yes, NO PRESSURE!
I wanted one but bought another merkur 34c and a few edwin jaggers instead...what the hell lol.
Well, let me say that I am new to all of this but really excited. I have dug out Grandpas leftovers and found that I needed a few things. I ordered a couple older straight razors and a new badger brush, razorock mudder focker shave soap, DE blades (several different brands to test), and finally a Merkur Futur razor.
Question is: can someone explain the different settings of the blade as to the type of shave they will get. I understand that angle adjustment one direction or the other will give you a more aggressive shave but what do you experience? Just a question from a newbie.
Thanks guys,
An excited newbie!!!
I keep mine on 1, any other setting is too much andscrapes my face. Feather blades are my preference.
Thanks guys. This is exactly what I was looking for.
I have had a Futur for some years. It's a great razor and I get good shaves with it. Start on a low number setting and work up until you find your number. On high settings it's dangerous!
I have mine on 4 or 5 usually for a very comfortable clean shave

One is plenty for me. The higher settings are way to aggressive. I had a Gillette "Thin" that was adjustable and even on "1", it was way to aggressive. If Marshall ever went in to the Razor business, they'd probably make one that goes all the way up to "11".
Whatever you settle on as a setting for your adjustable razor depends on 2 things, as far as I can see. They are whether you have sensitive skin and to what degree and how good your technique is shaving with a DE. That is why some only use the least aggressive setting, most a middle setting and some the most aggressive setting. I think that is the big advantage of an adjustable DE, it can be tailored to an individuals needs rather than going through multiple DEs finding on that suits you best.

This razor is so heavy that it's way too easy to "help" it along, only adding to the pressure you are adding to your face. Trust me, the weight alone of the Futur is enough. I have to remind myself when I use it. I never have the trouble with my Fatboy.
I sually have it on "1" for the first pass - WTG, then go to "2" on the ATG. I imagine since it doesn't have that second blade to finish the "cut", after streching the whisker, it allows the whisker to "snap back". Adding a tad more aggresiveness solves that problem.
well, made my first shave with the future last night. enjoyed it. i started with the setting on "1" but ended up with a "3" for me. it was great. no problems and a very close shave. it did a very good job on my head as well. i had to get the wife to get my roll in the back of my head as i didn't feel that comfortable with it for the first time.
thanks for the suggestions.
Glad it all worked out well for you on your first go with the Futur.

I also have a Futur and it and my Mergress are my "go to razors" for my everyday shave. I currently set my Futur on #2 and get great, close shaves! Like it was said before, do not apply much/any pressure with this razor. It is very heavy . . . . just let it do it's thing!:)
