Is it necessary to use oil for lubricating a safety razor?
About the only time I have lubricated a DE is when I rehab older TTO Gillettes. That is just for the threaded shaft in the handle for the TTO mechanism. I don't know that lubricating a DE would do much good considering any lubricant would likely get washed out by water, especially hot water, during shaving.

Like Bob, I've only lubed TTO (twist to open) safeties. Old Gillettes that needed cleaning. We would wash them in Scrubbing Bubbles, rinse and soak overnight in a jar of mineral oil. Most guys avoid any petroleum based oil for lubing DEs, since it is going onto your tender skin.
If you are ever cleaning a gold plated safety razor use Windex. Stronger stuff can remove the lacquer that protects the plate, if not the plate itself.
I personally have never used oil on any of my safety razors, I don't see the need to with the exceptions stated above. Also, DE blades come oiled in the package.
Well I will usually lube mine once a year because, I use straights as well so I will rotate between DE's and straights, so to keep them performing well after sitting for awhile I lube them, especially if you have a lot of DE's
If your talking about rust prevention, then I would say no unless you're putting the away for long-term storage. If you're talking about thread lubrication, the same is true.
I like Ballistol to lube just about anything. It just works!

I have never used anything other than a good rinse and good towel dry. I then leave it out for twenty four hours and store.
I like Ballistol it is great, and good towel dry is great as well I usually let mine dry a little over 24 hours and towel it twice second time just to make sure.
I also like to thing of it as little extra prevention will never hurt.

These razors were never designed to last long enough to require lubrication... The advent of our "disposable society" .. when the future and it's promise were just over the horizon!
Bravo, mate .... inspiring
