Attachment 247331Attachment 247330Just picked up two Gillett tto's from an estate sale. I don't know anything about them. Neither is a adjustable, one has a knurled handle and feels very light. The other is a checkered handle that is wider at the part you turn to open. It feels heavier than the knurled one. They are both stamped on the bottom of the head "reg us pat off Gillett made in usa" The knurled one also has a Y and 4 stamps. The other has D and 1.

The knurled handled one (Y4) indicates it was made the last quarter of 1953, the other one (D1) was made the first quarter of 1958 and appears to be in very nice condition. Blades are still available for those razors. If you have never shaved with one of this type razor once you do try them and get used to them you will enjoy the shaves.
Yeah they were kinda scrungie,but cleaned up nicely with some dish soap and hot water. One had a blade in it,so now it has rust staining inside the doors. But I am planning on using one or both, so I am not too concerned. At 7.50 per, I wasn't too worried about loosing money if they turned out to be junk. I plan on trying one in the morning.Quote:

Forgot to mention I got a package of Gillette super blues with the razors. Not fimiliar with these either,but I'm going to give them a go too.

Those are both Gillette Superspeeds. The one that's all knurled is known as a 40's style superspeed. The other style is a Flairtip Superspeed. This particular flairtip is known as the "TV Special" because they were given away to promote a TV show that Gillette sponsored. As far as I know, they were only produced in 1958. They should both shave about the same(fairly mild). I prefer the look and feel of the 40's style.

Congrats on the superspeeds. I have a y3 and it is a very good shaver. IDK, but I'd be a little hesitant to use old blades that may be 60 years old. Perhaps someone more knowledgeable about Gillette blues could advise. I use new Gillette yellow 7 o'clocks, but I would suggest a blade sampler pack with a variety. They're pretty cheap.
Was the tv special plated with different metal? Seams to be a different shade of silver than the older one. I know it's hard to tell from the pics. Thanks for the infoQuote:

The red tipped were highly sought after a year or so ago, perhaps because of the limited production, and said to be the most aggressive of the flair tipped razors super speeds.
I usually soak in hot water with Dawn dish soap for a couple days, then into the ultrasonic. If you don’t have one, some scrubbing bubbles and a soft tooth brush works well.
I find Flitz and a soft tooth brush works well to bring a shine to the nickel and will get in all the knurling and should remove the rust.
Buff with a micro fiber. You can clean the black from the micro fiber, by soaking in Simple Green overnight then washing in the machine normally.
Nice! I just had my grandpa's 1954 TTO restored by Razor Emporium. They are fun, mild shavers. Hope you enjoy them.
Nice score mate you can also use a soft toothbrush with toothpaste but those should clean up like new as a lot of great members have said before me
