Good morning all, just a question about the best way to clean a "Fatboy". Bit of a broad question, but could you please help? Thanks in advance.

You could try using a soft toothbrush and some tooth paste to get rid of the soap scum build up.

Thank you Bob.
i used steradent it is for cleaning dentures
I normally use a citrus cleaner (as above) (cheap)
Then i use a white or cider vinegar soak to loosen the crud.
Then while wet from the soak, I run the razor through all its mechanical paces. That way, I am better assured that the crud is gone and will not be holding stuff I do not want near my face.
Then rinse well under running warm water while running the razor through its paces a few times to get the acidic vinegar out.
An ultrasonic cleaner works well, but costs a lot and you just speed up the processes above.
Just my experiences...

Others will have some other 'solutions' also.
You can youtube search and find vids on how to take them apart. I did this myself. Wasnt to bad. The trick is getting back together at the right setting. So that 9 is 9 and 1 is 1. Took my a few trys before i got that correctly done.
If I find one out in the wild I use hot water and Dawn dish soap in my Ultra Sonic cleaner otherwise just regular cleaning is an old toothbrush and Dawn dish soap
I always put some water and dawn dish soap in a small pot then boil it on the stove. Follow up with a tooth brush and you won’t believe the crud that boils out... lol
There are some internal plastic parts, so be careful not to use anything that will attack plastic.
That is an awesome idea!!!
When my coffee pots get a layer of coffee scum stuck to the insides, which I hate to the point I'm obsessed with keeping them clean, I actually use a Polident denture cleaner in it overnight. I usually have to scrub the inside with a dish brush to loosen it, and then add up to 3 tablets to finally get it clean, and I'm pretty good about keeping the pots clean and stored.
Using a Polident on an old DE makes perfect sense, and I can see it superbly cleaning it as well...I have two FatBoys I cleaned using toothbrush and toothpaste, they cleaned up, but going to throw them both in a small bowl of water now with a Polident tab, if it works the same way as it did on the Stainless Steel coffee pots, they'll come out gleaming....:D
On the other hand, I'll try one first....just to make sure it doesn't dissolve or anything.....:rofl2:
Thank you constant
You know what? I was completely wrong! The original Fatboy did not have plastic parts. What I thought was a plastic collar on mine is the end of a blued metal collet. What I thought was a red plastic index pin is a red-colored metal spring.
Later Gillette Adjustables had a bunch of plastic (baseplate, handle) but not the old Fatboy. Sorry I got it wrong!
Scrubbing Bubbles in the aerosol can works really well in cleaning up a crusty DE razor. Make sure you get the kind without bleach. Get the razor wet, foam it up, and let it sit for 5 minutes or so. Take a toothbrush and scrub it up. Rinse it really well and let it dry. After that, you can use some polish like Maas to shine it up. It's always worked for me. A plus is that it also sanitizes really well.
Oops. I just saw that you are in the UK. I don't know if Scrubbing Bubbles is available there.
US cleaners are such as used with water and some detergents etc. to remove gunk from many different items. Even the little ones 500ml for contact lenses can work for a razor head. A 1 litre capacity is usually sufficient for safety razors.

I have two cleaners similar to these, both small 600ml and 3L. In the UK:
ultrasonic-cleaner
In the US, Harbor Freight and Amazon and others sell the cleaners.
Similarly to advises given above, I start with mild dish soap then I use vinegar. On the old razors which I inherited, I let them soak in vinegar/water solution for a bit.
Used a toothbrush, toothpicks cotton swabs to remove old soap buildup.
Lots of patience and elbow grease get the job done!
Cheers.
Once it's clean, I would like to have one replated. I have had bad luck with the search function. It keeps gpoing to the web for strange serach results. It the past I have seen amny suggeted people that can do the renovation. Can you refresh my serch with the favorite and honest?
Razor plate.com. He's the best, will not be right away he has a regular job. But his work is excellent, I had a gold tech and a fat boy in Rhodium. Now my 55 year old fat boy will be here another 55. Tc
Thank you so very. I appreciate the info.
I've tried several, this is the only one I recommend. I,m looking for a particular razor now to have him replace in black and chrome Rhodium. The guy is a specialist. Tc
Chris is his name. Tc
I have heard scrubbing bubbles, but not tried it yet.

Hiya,
Here's some things to try that work well for me when I wanna make a Fatboy look real handsome like. Pick any or all and see what happens.
When I get a new to me razor that's kinda on the rough side first things a long Dawn/hot water soak for the culprit....after removing any 'stuff' in the razor beforehand....heh. Dawn is highly recommended for some reason but true.
If the new razor doesn't need much work after buying then the soak is skipped at first and instead some Maas polish is used on the head and handle to see what the condition is really like. Scrubbing Bubbles are fine for the next step but I like to know about the wear and true condition right away and an excellent polish like Maas is miles above any kinda bubbles that clean but not polish.
Then the Bubbles get in the act and a toothbrush, rinse, and in that hot bath. More Maas using when dried off. It's gonna remove a bunch of tarnish you didn't know what there.
Then another quick soapywater&rinse and done deal. Take a Q tip dipped in mineral oil and lightly touch on each moving part of the doors. Lightly apply oil to the adjuster, both the ring and red spot.
Good to go,
Martin
I'm a newbie too
So maybe this isn't a good idea but I've used 3 in 1 oil (penetrates, cleans and lubes) with a tooth brush and shiny it up with some Flitz. Every second or third use a light pump or two of camellia oil from a fine mist spray bottle.
Not sure if these are the best option as I am new but they seem to work well.
I use dish soap and a tooth brush :)
