Returning to soap and blade

I've been away for a while and finally dropped the electric razor in the drawer. Since my return, I've been playing with all my razors, cleaning, sharpening, and putting in new blades. The last few shaves have been with the straights, but today I gave my old trusty Gillette a try with a brand new Silver blade in place. MDC soap, my favorite badger brush, and the Gillette made for a wonderful baby smooth shave. It's true, the quality of the oldies shines through because they just get better with age. I know the wife really likes it. :D

Then put the DE in the drawer. The straight is the way to go! Enjoy being back and join in when you can.

Thank you, most kind. This razor is special as it was manufactured the year and quarter I was born. That it still produces such a beautiful shave is a true testament. I'm actually considering having it restored and Rhodium plated. It should last until my Grandson's Grandson learns to shave. That would make a heck of a story.

Welcome--I could never use an electric, they just didn't work for me, but I tried everything else. Like you, I'm back to DE and in my case the occasional straight razor. Nothing compares to real edges.

Actually, as good as the vintage DE's are the new crop of DE's which use way more precision in manufacture and better materials give better shaves. Mated with the right blade you can now get a DE shave that comes so close to a straight that....well....

There is something magical about a razor sharp piece of steel. Fortunately, shaving technique is based largely on muscle memory, so like riding a bicycle, you skill should return quickly.

I Agree! electric shavers are really not good for close shaving, I also usually go for Straight or Safety Razor! though its true Gillette comes a long way into razors too... welcome to the community :)

My electric razor experience lasted about a month, in my youth in San Francisco, and I got rid of the razor and have never looked back. I replaced it with the Gillette Fatboy, which tore up my face, not because it was a bad razor, rather because like most pilgrims I didn't know how to shave.

Years later I tried a variety of Gillette, GEM, Every-Ready and Schick injector safety razors — and all are gone. The modern safety razors give me a far superior shave. So there is a lot to try. It's a pricey venture, but it is well worth it.

My beard is not really thick, but it is coarse and it has swirls that change the direction of growth all over the place.

I was given a rotary blade electric shaver (Phillips I think) in grade 9 when I was told by the vice principal that I had to shave. All the electric razor did was defoliate the skin between the beard hairs a little bit. I had a 5 o’clock shadow within three hours of shaving. The shaver went into a drawer for the next 10 years.

So I got a Gillette adjustable DE and used that for the next few years until I forgot to tighten the butterfly sufficiently before shaving and nearly cut my throat when the loose blade grabbed skin. Into the drawer it went with the electric.

For the next 10 years I tried cartridge razors with ever increasing number of blades and Teflon strips. They worked fine, but were expensive. I soon discovered it was cheaper to buy a new razor with blades than to keep the razor and buy blades alone - kinda like inkjet printers and ink cartridges.

By then I had graduated from university and got married. While on a honeymoon trip to England, I found a no name Sheffield straight razor and a paddle strop with a hone on one side and leather on the other at a London flea market. Haven’t looked back or had better shaves.
