Thread: Differences in Gillette 7 o’clock blades

Can someone remind me which ones are which and what the differences are? I’ve just used my last feather blade from a 100 pack and I think I’ll try something different for the next few hundred shaves.

All i can say is i remember the yellow pack being what i liked. Dont remember much else about them.

Before I can make recommendations, I would want to know more about your beard type, skin type and razors. It would also be helpful to know which blade you have been using and how they worked for you. But here is my take on the blades.

The 7 O'Clock Yellow SharpEdge blades are the least sharp of the four. However, I do find them to be sharper than Astra SP. They are one of my favorite blades in my Muhle R41 which is aggressive and has a lot of face feel. The smoothness of the Yellows tames the aggressive razor. However, with my tough beard, I prefer sharper blades in less aggressive razors.

There are two 7 O'Clock blades in Green packaging. One is the Super Stainless blade made in Russia. The other is the PermaSharp Stainless blade made in India. Both are mid-sharp blades similar in sharpness to the Gillette Silver Blues and Astra Superior Stainless, also made in Russia. The three Russian blades might be a tad smoother than the Indian blades. Although not made by Gillette, I also consider Rapira Platinum Lux to be similar to these blades. Of these blades, Astra SS and Rapira PL are the least expensive.

The 7 O'Clock Black Super Platinum blades made in India are in an entirely different category. They are one of the sharpest blades you can buy, ranking right up there along with Feather, BIC Chrome Platinum, Gillette PermaSharp Super, and Gillette Nacet. Although not so sharp on the first shave, as the coating wears off, they become super sharp. I love them in milder razors, but they are too sharp for me in an aggressive razor. If your shaving technique is not up to par, you might regret trying them. If you are not careful, there will be blood, especially in a more aggressive razor.

Thanks. I recall our friend Obie gifting me a pack of the yellow blades around 8 years ago. But I truthfully couldn’t remember what I had thought of them. I’ve been using feather professionals in a 1959 Gillette tech ball end almost exclusively for about 5 years now with the occasional straight shave with an artist club. I’m just looking for a change of pace. Think I’ll go with the yellows next. Or any recommendations regarding vokshod?

I find Voskhods to be a smooth blade similar in sharpness to the GSB and Rapira Platinum Lux.

If you are used to using Feather blades, you might like the 7 O'Clock Blacks best. However, if you want a slightly milder blade, the 7 O Clock Green, Rapira or Voskhod might be suitable. Since the Gillette Tech ball end is not an aggressive razor, the Yellows might be a little mild.
