I bet Gillette isn't even making the razor, someone else is for them. The Gillette Silver Blue blades are good though and made in Russia iirc.
Bob
I love the Silver Blues, but what are the Gillette Platinum blades like Bob? IIRC, I've tried them, but can't recall my experience.
On a different note, the razor looks decidedly like an imitation of some excellent ones that I have, but mine are made of better material than this one seems to be.
Sorry, can't say what the Gillette Platinum are like never having used them. Just glanced at the packaging in the link and thought they were the Silver Blues at first glance. Packaging looks near the same except for the large written Platinum on the box which I completely missed.
The razor head reminds of the Edwin Jager DE head https://www.edwinjagger.co.uk/edwin-...nd-blades.html . Making a replica vintage Gillette handle should not be much of a problem either.
Bob
Smart, for Gillette the razor has always been a lost leader. The goal was to sell, more razor blades.
What better way to get shavers to try double edge razors that to give them away for $35?
The TTO (Twist to Open) razors were designed to make changing blades easier, so folks would change blades more often, it worked…
I would not be surprised to see a new TTO or “Fat Boy” come out in the near future that will cut the competition in price and sell more blades.
Gillette makes zillions of blades in third world countries and DEs too where they are very popular so my guess is they are just importing one of those.
Not a bad move by Gillette, at all.
They notice many people going back to DE shaving and doing other hipster things, they might as well cash in on it.
I wonder if they're going to offer more DE blades or make them more readily available and at what cost and quality.
Neat looking set!
neat looking set, i'd be tempted to get one if i didn't already have a similar one. Not a bad price either. Maybe they will reintroduce a affordable Toggle. :)
I too thought the base plate looks a little like an E.J.
The price is right. As long as the plating on the head doesn't wear out too quickly from being made cheap.
Although this WILL be controversial Its also smart for gillette to make the razor out of the lower material because the razor Will fail sooner and Will have to be replaced so they can get more money because if its made out of to good of a material all anyone will ever replace is blades. Also since we are all assuming this is not an in house product from gillette then it will be easier for gillette to get the already made parts. I mean yes the head looks similar to some of the replacement heads already available on eb@y (yes deliberately misspelled) for less than 4 dollars from hong kong... I think people will buy this more for collecting than anything since its the first one in decades. And its at least a good sign that they are recognizing the wet shavers out there And its good damage control for gillettes recent snafu's And also a good way to test the waters. If its a hit and sells well great they continue but if not they call it limited and anniversary and holiday release and either dont do it again or only do it for special occasions like christmas, fathers day, or for gillete anniversaries.
Yes, poor plating or dropping and chipping the plating can e a problem if the razor head is die cast using a zinc alloy. If that happens and the alloy is exposed to water it will start to deteriorate. IIRC vintage Gillette razors did not use die cast construction but real metal. Could also be the reason the price is right.

Nothing wrong with die cast DE heads as long as nothing happens to the plating or you chip it. I have at least 1 made that way and it shaves nicely. Just don't think you are getting a Gillette built like the vintage ones for that price.
Bob
I get what you're saying, but strongly disagree.
That'd be VERY bad for business, especially for a brand name like Gillette, word goes around .. quickly. Au contraire, they could offer a good quality razor for a cheaper price than competitors and easily make up for it with the blades.
At least that's how a serious and smart business would approach it. The blades ARE what brings in the money, the razors not at all. Can't recall ANYONE in my entire family and friends buying more than one Gillette razor whichever it might've been, just not necessary. If the razor fails on me once, I'm buying another brand, it's that simple. (I'm not as concerned with cosmetics than functionality)
For Gillette's (and ours) best interest the razor should be of decent lasting quality. If not, well damn them!
im saying everything is designed to fail sooner these days than it used to be and if they dont want people complaining about the blades cost they have to be low cost and if a blade last one week that is only 52 blades a year a person will buy and if a pack of blades cost 5 dollars and has 10 blades then each person is only spending around 60 dollars a year on blades which isnt enough for them to want to keep making these DE razors when thats about what 1 or 2 pack of their current cartridges cost. Also im sure they have seen people complaining about the cost of things like the oneblade razors blade cost and dont want to fall into the same trap.....
Procter & Gamble owns Gillette and lots of other brands. Their financial model is built on “hook a lifetime repeat buyer”...take a peek:

That is only one part of planned obsolescence, designed to fail, and there is also going out of fashion by introducing the new and improved versions. The last bit is what drove Gillette to introduce ever more DE versions. The vintage Gillette DEs seemed to fail only from abuse, not by falling apart. That theme carried over to cart razors in the form of ever increasing blade counts and other "improvements". I'd like to know if Gillette intends to introduce ever increasing varieties of DE razors at this point to serve a very limited market. I think it more likely it is a one of money grab for those who are nostalgic.
Bob
i guess we will see.. i think they are releasing it when they are so that if its a hit they can continue and if its not successful they can say it was a limited edition or anniversary or christmas release and not do it again unless they want to do one at fathers day and holidays or anniversaries....who knows what will happen.
Indeed fellas.
Interesting trend, we've been in this trend for a loooooong time, some never left the 'old fashioned' shaving. I do notice an increase interest in other communities or people, whereas I can't get friends to go into straight razor shaving, I can get them into DE shaving; Gillette must've noticed.
Took them long enough to notice and catch up (again) and go back to 'basics' ;) If that's what they're doing. If they figure out there's a market to explore and money to be made AND can upkeep or improve on the quality of razors and blades, that's good. Although I'm not sure about the latter, especially as mentioned in today's society. A man can hope they'll bring a high standard and quality onto the market again, but it's very doubtful; luckily there are other makers who are doing this.
Luckily for us there are plenty of razor makers, who of us needs another DE razor? Probably nobody. Who kinda wants a Gillette set? I bet quite a few do, I know I'm tempted.
My favorite DE razor? My Merkur HD. Simple, but amazing razor. Not expensive either.
Then it's mostly about the blades, as SR shavers we can be finicky about the kind of edge we put to our face. I really like my Gillette Silver Blues and Personna Med Preps.é
Genius marketing, everyone is banging on about global warming and single use plastic etc. Step forward the new Gillette DE, cheap and environmentally friendly.
From the environmental angle they couldn't sing too loudly. Im only guessing they would make a much bigger profit selling multi blade razors.
Gillette are champions of advertising, if they advertised the new DE like they would a new mach 1000 it could spectacularly backfire if everyone dropped their old multi blade for a new DE razor. (the irony!)
Im probably getting ahead of myself the tree huggers dont wash or shave anyway:D
Thats a good question, Bob. As long as the product is environmentally friendly no one seems to care how its made effects the environment. Take the humble car, the internal combustible engine vs the electric battery , im no car buff but id hazard a guess that making the battery produces far more emissions.
The marketing ploy could work really well, especially with the push towards growing beards out of interest in being greener. I'm one of very few people I know of in my age range that actually shaves and I know of only 2 other people in their 30's that actually shaves their whole face.
As far as their bottom line of the DE versus a multiblade cart, it would appear that they get way more profit off of modern disposables. However, the cost of designing those products and building all associated equipment to manufacture them has to be astronomical. Unless they're dumber than I expect, they should just dust off old drawings and make the DE's. They still manufacture, or private label more likely, the blades and they have to be fractions of a cent to produce.

The Amazon.com announcement contains an FAQ:
So, pretty clearly, it's _sold_ by Gillette, not _made_ by Gillette. And it looks a lot like an EJ DE89.Quote:
Frequently Asked Questions
Is this a true Gillette Razor?
Yes, this is the first Double Edge razor set sold by Gillette in the US since the late 1980s. In 1901, King C. Gillette altered the shaving experience forever with the invention of the first safety razor. Now, more than a century later, Gillette is celebrating the holiday season by releasing the Gillette Heritage – Inspired Double Edge Safety Razor. This premium 3-piece razor set is inspired by the original 1929 Gillette double edge razor and is the perfect gift for those looking to elevate their shaving experience.
Will there be any re-issues of previously released models (like the Superspeed)?
At this time there are no plans to re-issue any previously released double edge safety razor models. This is currently the first Double Edge razor set sold by Gillette in the US since the late 1980s.
Will the new razor have the classic date code etched on the bottom of the razor head like vintage models?
The Gillette Heritage – Inspired Double Edge Razor does not contain a date code on it.
Why wasn't a "classic" design like the twist-to-open Superspeed used?
This specific razor is simply inspired by the original 1929 Gillette double edge razor. The Gillette Heritage – Inspired Double Edge Razor features a premium chrome plated handle inspired by the classic “Bar” handle and brings a historic design to your daily shave.
Where is the razor manufactured?
The blades are manufactured in Russia, the handle is made in the USA and the capguard is made in Germany.
What materials is the razor made out of?
The blades are stainless steel and the handle is a chrome plated alloy.
The cost of a branded EJ DE89, or equivalent 3-piece Merkur, from Amazon.com, is around $30 - $40. Assuming that the Gillette is of equivalent quality (probably made in the same shop), they've priced it competitively.
Neat !
Almost like when is a Gillette not really a Gillette.
Bob
Amazon recently advised me that my October 16th order would be delayed and I took the opportunity to rethink the order and cancel it.
I was curious, but also remembered that Gillette’s strength has always been marketing (hype), that I only use a safety razor when a straight razor shave is not an option for one reason or another, and that whatever Gillette may (almost certainly have someone else) come up with is unlikely to be better than what I already have.
If I should stand to be corrected on the last point, I am comfortable to sit on the fence and let others spend the money to prove me wrong.
B
well i have heard some mixed reviews about this razor from those that have received theirs.. some say they love it others hate it. its either too mild or not mild enough.. so what are every ones thoughts that have gotten theirs ??
Anyone gotten one?
