Thread: where to get injector blades?

i found a nice old schick injector and would love to try it but need blades. i live in southwestern ontario and would like to either get them somewhere close or order from somewhere in ontario if possible, if not i want the best deal. it seems i am ina bit of a wasteland as far as straight or SE shaving goes. i can find some DE blades here and ther but even those are not so commun. any advice would be great.

I was surprised to find that my local CVS pharmacy carried injector blades. They are sharp, and give a SUPER smooth cut, too..... Go figure right? I would have never messed with the things, except my father in law found a disposable straight that used injector blades at a yard sale, and the rest was history......

I know that this doesn't do you any good in Canada, but just check at your pharmacies/druggists/chemists

I have found injector blades at CVS (CVS Branded) as well as Schick blades at smaller grocery stores and drug stores. Another good source is eBay where the are frequently available.

Another great blade for injectors is the Feather disposable straight blade. These are my favorite blades, but they are a lot more trouble because they have to be trimmed down in length before they will fit. Definitely a PITA, but what a shave!

A lot of guys prefer blades from Ted Pella (tedpella.com I think), which are intended for scientific/medical use. I haven't tried them yet, so I can't comment on the shave.

I just bought some feathers for use in my old injector, but my scissors can't cut through the feather. What tool do you use to trim the feathers?

Let me just mention that my own experience with injectors ran the gamut, from gruesome to sublime. Yeah, as you may have guessed, there's some variables regarding those types of shavers. Finally, after no little amount of trial and error, I was able to achieve the best shaves of my life........including DE shaving. No, I haven't used a straight yet, so I know I'm missing out on something that may be even better.

If you have an older, short bakelite type handled injector, be aware it may very possibly give you a closer shave than you might like. In other words, the older types like the 'G' are known to be more aggressive than later models. Just letting you know what they're like, and that's from personal experience as well as general opinions. Some injector users prefer those over all other types, so what do I know............heh.

The later models with longer handles tend to be milder, but certainly very effective shavers. Those were much more comfortable for me to use, and I'd recommend something like a 'J' or 'L' type as a good introduction.

Anyway, The Pella blades (teflon coated version I believe) mentioned by another poster are popular, and they are pretty reasonable as well. Then you have the Schick blades sold in many stores, until recently only made in Germany. Those got good reviews from most members. Then you have the NOS Schick blades, which can be excellent, depending on if they're coated or not. The uncoated SS ones are the best bet for those.

Now there's been Chinese Schick blades being sold in local US stores...... just introduced and not many reviews yet. However, one reviewer at SMF (Gordon) has tried em, and found those to be very good! He likes em better than the Germans, and almost as much as NOS. That's one guy I'd listen to when it comes to injector blades, so those would be some to look for. They run about $6 per package of 7, and come in the nice all metal dispenser.

Oh.....I'd send some of those Schick blades out if you like. Both the german and chinese variety are available here. I can grab some of those CVS injectors to try also, but can't remember what they cost.

I have used sheetmetal snips, which work fine. My preferred method is to use a Dremel with a cut off wheel. You can do several blades and then (very carefully) load them into an injector blade loader/box.

oh and thanks for the tip on cutting the feather blades as our local aesthetics store has them in stock i believe. and i appreciate the offer to send some out and may take you up on that once i have tried it out. all the posts have been great. thank you.

I have a bakelite handle injector just like yours (although mine doesn't look as nice as your). It's a great shaver.

I think that as far as safety razors go, the injector is the high water mark. Nothing after it was really an improvement, except to the Gillette bottom line

well since you have one just like mine did it come with a key for changing the blades? on the underside it has an arrow that says insert key. i wasn't sure if i needed one or if it came with one.

The key is the protruding piece on the blade container. You slide that in where indicated by the arrow. Doing so holds the clamping section of the razor head (the piece on the top or outside) open. Once that is done the slider on top of the box is used to move the blade out of the box and into place in the razor. It's actually pretty easy.
