Default Gillette Super Adjustable with short handle 1970 (P2)

FS: Gillette Super Adjustable Short Handle - Badger & Blade

i just got this item, had my first shave with gillette rubie blades. was a pretty good shave.

anyway, it's got 9 adjustments. 9 being the biggest gap between the blade and the bottom. my question is what adjustment is best? or is it relative and simply needs experimentation to find the best results.

I have/use a vintage Gillette Adj DE (E2) while waiting for my SR to come and through advice i started with the #3 setting (1 being the least aggresive 9 being the highest) if you read through some of the posts theres some excellent advice/experience that will help you with getting that BBS shave from your DE as I have been getting,my tactic through advice was starting on #3 for a week then i moved to #4 and so on,trying to find that number that suits me,yes the type of blade that you use can differ the setting so some trial and error may be the ticket.

It's a matter for experiment, but I'd recommend starting at Four and adjusting up or down as the comfort of the shave indicates.
I wouldn't recommend adjusting during the shave - just make adjustments for the next one if you feel they're necessary.

    Hi,

One thing to keep in mind as well is that different blades work better (or worse) at different settings. As you change the settings higher (toward 9), you not only change the blade exposure, the gap you noticed, but the angle the blade is against the skin.

Once you find a stetting that will give you a great shave with one blade, you may want to go back to a "lower/milder" setting when trying another brand.

    Just my thoughts,
    Ken.

If you need to ask, I would start with an adjustment of 2, or at most a 3.
In general, use the lowest number that gives a good shave; 3 is about equal to most non adjustable razors.
A higher number does not give a better shave, just a greater chance or irritation or a nick if the razor is not handled properly.

Great choice for a first DE, I,ve had mine since I was sixteen. Still a treat to use after 35 years. Although I use a cut throat now, I still use the Black Bueaty when traveling. Happy shaves.

    Hi there,

If I may offer my thoughts for whatever they're worth:

Personally, I found most fixed head razors to be similar to the #5 setting on most Gillette adjustables. Since my magic number is 3, most non adjustables are a little too aggressive for my most comfortable shaves. Heh, open combs are even more so, (unfortunately for me).

A higher number gives me a closer shave, but not a better one. I sacrifice some comfort for the little extra closeness, and it's not worth it to me. Yeah, you do have to pay more attention on a higher setting, but the results can be excellent if you have a coarse beard and need the extra bite. I don't fall into that group, so the #3 setting works best for my face.

Anyway, it's how things seem to me.

    Martin

Oh, I also agree with the other poster about this SH super being an excellent razor to start.
