Should I?
For a while the tought of trying a DE has been temting me.I have been shaving exclusivly with straights for about 1,5 years now, and I still love it.However, I would like to be able to shave in the morning, yes I could probably get out of bed earlyer, but I allready get up at 05.30 to make it to work in time. Two weeks ago I tried a mach 3 or 5 or whathever, with canned laether, since I was traveling and left my shaving gear at home.
This was the first time in well over a year.
WAS I STUNNED!!
I've been so spoiled with straightshaves for the last year, that I had forgot what a crappy shave you get.I even used a hot towel and three passes.I meen it felt ok while shaving, but I got nothing like a straight BBS.Also the stubble somehow came back much faster, and I got a razor rash the next day.Basically it really sucked. My question is therefore:
Do you get a notacibly better shave with a DE then with a multyblade?
If not, I'm passing.
Thanks Kristoffer

If was going to have just one safety razor, it would be an SE, not a DE. I get a much closer shave, with very little effort, with the SE than with a DE. More like a straight shave for me. I haven't used a cartridge in a long time, so I can't really compre to that. I went DE before the Mach 3 came out. I was an Atra man before that. For me, Atra<DE<SE.

Forget DEs go to SEs. Schicks and Gems. A better shave and less to worry about.
Generally you will spend all your time in the DE area finding a blade that works for your face. Then every razor acts differently with the different blades. PIA!!!
An SE does not have this weakness. There are only a few suppliers of SE blades. Personna being the biggest. Gems and Everreadys are the closest to a Str8 that you are going to find. Schicks I like for speed.

I started out with a DE and moved into straights, and while I use a straight 90%+ of the time to shave I still enjoy using my DE from time to time. As to the actual shave, it's miles better than the disposable crap and IMO comes respectably close to straight shave quality. I say go for it, it's great for traveling or when time is short.

I started with a DE before I made the switch to straights. There was a very noticable difference using the DE compared to the multiblade razors. In my mind the DE shave is just below the straight shave, but far above the multiblade cartidge shave.
-
I think you do.I shaved for many years with a DE and got real good shaves.I would say it's between the multiblade and the straight, but closer to the straight shave.
-
I'd take a DE over a Mach 3 any day. Just be careful.
I actually tried a str8 before a DE, and the DE is dead silent and doesn't feel like it's doing anything.....so naturally I did the intelligent thing and pushed harder. Never has my face cursed me more than my first DE shave.
It doesn't have the audio feedback like a str8, but it gets the job done almost as well.
Straight is king, DE is Queen, and cartridges are the court jesters of shaving.

I've never shaved with one of the multi blade cartridge razors. If I couldn't use a straight my choice would be a Merkur 37C slant or the longer 39C version with a Feather blade.
-
If you're hankering after trying a DE, then go for it. They do give a far better shave than the multi things. Strangely, you're probably more likely to cut yourself with one though! Get a sample pack of blades too though. You never can tell which will work best for an individual.

I have a travel DE that I feed with Wilkinson sword blades.
OK for traveling light, not a straight razor shave, but a lot better than the mock3.

:)Ok! Great answers guys, thanks. I'm thinking of the merkur vision 2000.Good choice?
Also, how many shaves do you usually get from a singel blade?
And how do you store the razor with a blade on, is a stand mandatory?
All these questions.....

I have done the job with everything. Started out with those terrible electrics including the foil and rotary electrics with ocasional forays into disposable thingys. From there went to a fusion, mach 3, sensor excell, super speed, tech and finally to a dovo inox.
I would say that by going to a double edge you are giving up the ability to get right under the nose and to even out those side burns. I would recommend picking up one double edge just to see what its like and a Derby Extra pack of blades. What single wedge says is true, which is why I recommend a pack of Derby Extra blades, they sastify the greatest number of people.

I just happen to have the merkur vision 2000 also. It is heavy and it takes a while to dial in. When that is said I get ok shaves with it now. Before I got in to straights I used it exclusively for about a year. I've gotten some of my worst nicks ever from it (with Merkur blades). Safety razor – my :cen.
It's not even close to a straight shave by any means, but I bet that no one but me notices.
Just make sure to buy good DE- blades to it. The Merkur blades that comes with it s:cen ks big time. A sample blade pack might be a good idea. I use Feather, Wilkinson Sword and Gillette with mine. Also it takes a lot less pressure than the mock3 to do the job. Let it "go by its own weight". It does not give a lot of feedback, but it is easier to learn than the straights.

just like some of the other guys, I prefer an SE over a DE
I love my GEM 1912...for me, a much closer and smoother shave w/ no effort whatsoever....not 5 million blade types to go through either. GEMs are readily available and inexpensive to boot.

My collection of DEs and SEs still outnumbers my straights, but the gap is slowly closing.
As noted earlier, you'll notice that the SEs give a shave closer to a straight, while the DEs, both blades and razors, have personalities that you need to explore before you know what combination works best for you.
Since I started using a straight I've noticed that i get more nicks from my DEs/SEs. However, that may be because I only use the "safety razors" when I'm in too much of a rush to do a good job with a straight. I can get a socially acceptable shave with a straight in just a few minutes, but even though I'm the only one that will feel the difference in most cases I prefer to get a good shave with whatever razor I choose. For me, fast shave = DE/SE while enjoyable shave = straight.
Just my $0.02.
