Almost as good as a straight shave!

For the last couple of months, I've been shaving more and more with a DE.
I haven't quit straightshaving(never will) But it's much more convinient for me to shave with a DE in the morning.Until resently, I've only had the travel mercur.But a few days ago, I recieved a mercur progress.WOW!
I simply love it! Allmost as close a shave as with a straight.And frankly with less irritation(feather or bluebird blade.) Just the weight of this baby in my hand make simile:)

Does it get any better then this? Any suggestions for any particular DE?
(I'm not getting the future or vision, to modern looking for my taste)

Merkur 37C Slant or the longer handled version, the 39C with a Feather blade.

The slant was/is my favorite DE. If I ever went back to DE that would be my choice and I've shaved with all of the usual suspects. It is not magic or anything and other razors gave me equally good shaves but there is just something about it that I really like.

If you can find one, try a British NEW long comb. Awesome razor, very aggressive, but a great shave. I still prefer straights to DEs. I started with straights and after about 8 months tried a few DEs (Mergress -- a modified Progress -- a couple of NEWs, a vintage Gillette -- now my wife's), but sold them all except the wife's and one British NEW that I use for travel.

I have an Edwin Jagger 89 and I LOVE it. Great weight and balance, very affordable, very forgiving (only one major nick, and that was from me buffing too hard on my problem area) and with my Astra blades it gives me a close, smooth, long-lasting shave. Definitely one worth adding to your DE rotation.

I love to use a DE occasionally. The straight is like a sports car and the DE is like an automatic luxury station wagon. The DE is a lot of fun, but I wouldn't want to give up the straights. The DE I love to use is an open comb old Gillette.

I have trimmed my DE razor collection to one, the Edwin Jagger "Chatworth" barley, a lovely razor. The only time I use it, however, is when in a rush. I used it yesterday, Saturday, since I had a gig in Chicago and had to get get moving fast.

The shave was great, but even that one time, I missed the stropping and rest of the colorful ritual that comes with a straight razor. So, yes, I will keep the double edge in the rack and use it only when forced by lack of time.

By the way, my blades are the Feather and the Gillette 7 O'Clock "yellow."

After spending quite a bit of time getting an excellent shave from a DE, I've recently made the switch to a straight and have been getting better and better with it on a daily basis. I've also noticed two simple truths about the differences:

1. Whatever my best shave is with a DE, I can always shave even closer with a straight. The closeness of the shave is probably best measured in hours -- at 5 pm, the best DE shave I can hope to get still feels rougher than my average SR shave at 10 pm. To me, that's the reason to go through the extra 10 mins in the morning.

2. As I get better with the straight, it really doesn't take much more time than the DE, and in some cases (like when I strop the night before) it takes even less. The DE has to be used with short, light, discontinuous strokes and shaken around in the water often. Even using both sides of the blade, it takes a bit of time to complete each pass. I go slow and careful with the SR too, of course, but I find that I can move through each part of my face with one long, careful but continuous "wipe". You just don't get that type of shaving with a DE, and that is how you can make up some of the time.

About your DE selection, KEEP THE PROGRESS and forget everything else. I use both the Progress and the Slant, but my favorite is still the Progress. Personally, I just don't see what all the raving is about with the Slant. Yes, it's an aggressive, attractive shaver, but I'm not as convinced about its cult following. IMHO, the Progress is about as good as a DE gets. Now if they only would start making them in gold, like the Slants . . . !

I find Gem's to be closer shavers than anything else and virtually foolproof if the correct angle is maintained. The S/E blades give me next to zero irritation.

I really like the Merkur Progress...

I've also been recently using a Gillette Superspeed with a Feather blade. I have had good luck with this combination.

To be honest, I haven't been using straights much over the past year...I'm afraid the thrill has worn off.

I've never used a slant but the progress is solid. I really enjoy the handle on the 38c... nice and big gives it a good feel.
