Fed up with the aggravation

Little bit about myself: 21 years old, work at a corporate office, can make time for a respectable shave.

What I've used: Norelco $150 electric (close shave, lots of irritation/bumps) Disposables (persona) after that, okay shave but not what I wanted. 2 weeks of that and I wanted to get a better shave, so I did some searching.

What happened: Read about "safety razors" (sorry for the continuing ignorance on nomenclature) and the benefits. Decided I needed something for the next day, so I bought a Shick Quattro Titanium... Lousy. Sharp blades, but a shave worse than my disposables. Suffice to say that one shave was enough to send me back to disposables. Sad, I know.

What I NEED: A man's shave. I think it means a trip back in time to the days of single blades and brushes. I know It's customary for a member to be in a forum for a while to earn any type of credibility, but I'm asking for help. Bottom line: does anyone have a razor and brush that they're willing to pass on to an aspiring convert? I've had incredible help from a cycling forum I frequent, and I hope to have the same luck here. I thank all of you in advance!!

there are a bunch of cheap offerings in the razor classifieds right now.
Van der Hagen soap+ brush + bowl = ~8 bucks @ Walmart.
You will also need a simple leather strop.
you can buy a razor+ strop set up for 60 @ ruprazor

Ah, I'm looking for a DE I believe... Not a "cut throat"

In that case you would be better off looking at ebay or a antique shop. I've gotten a couple, one from each of those, and didn't spend much.

If you are after DE shaving info, you are probably better to check the badger and blade website - they are more DE focused and you will see a lot of newbie PIFs there that you can take advantage of.

Also, check youtube for mantic59's vids on all things DE shaving.

Then in a few months time when you have your prep worked out and you are bored with the DE, you can move up to a straight razor. :)

This sounds like me a while back..!

Used to use the Mach 3 and got loads of irritation and bumps so I moved onto a DE. Then got into the straights and havent looked back..!

If you're looking for a DE, I got a Merkur from Amazon. They have a whole bunch on there for between £20 and £40 and they're great!

go to epay and get a old DE and look on here and get a straight razor once you get that straight your gonna wish you never even bothered with a DE but im still learning alot so i use an old vintage DE to touch up the spots i miss or cant get with the straight yet

I would suggest you try the Badger and Blade forum, the majority of people there use DE razors.

DEs are a great way to shave and you can get a very close, comfortable shave with them. But not as close as you can get with a straight. :tameshigiri:

Oh yes, I checked that site, but the set-up and navigation of the whole site isn't as nice as this one... Plus the top threads were "lame" hahaha. I'll have to go stir up things over there :)

If you are here asking about DEs I can tell you that DEs are a gate way razor. Before you know it you will be into the hard stuff. This will lead you to various acquisition disorders like RAD, SBAD, SAD and HAD
