In another thread our own BeBerlin mentioned the new PILS safety razor which can be seen here . I am intrigued but it sure is a hefty price tag. Anyone tried this lovely piece of machinery ? At that price point the workmanship would have to be far superior to Merkurs if I was to be satisfied. Now if they would only make a slant version. :) The vendor also carries quite a selection of straight razors.

Let's not. Pilsner was invented in the city of Pilsen in Bohemia (today, Czech Republic). Many beers are brewed according to "Pilsner Brauart", ie you can have a US lager and call it Pils.Quote:

I had a Pils brush when I first got into the hobby, it was sold as a High Mountain White, (and seems to be more high-end than the brushes they currently offer), and had a price tag to match. Ultimately, it was massively overpriced for what it was, and whilst there was nothing to complain about functionally or structurally, I got the distinct impression that I was paying more for the name than the actual product. Given the cost of the DE, I think it would fall into the same category as their brushes.

Interesting. In terms of styling, they remind me of the pictures I've seen of the coveted Wilkinson "Sticky". Maybe this was an intentional hat tip, seeing the price? :hmmm:
the photos don't show much detail.. the price is ridiculous. doesnt look like the 'head' places much curvature on the blade, it all looks very flat. handle looks slippery.
google translate is kinda funky.

In a word... Yes, and it is. Speaking from someone who has had to repair a Vision (even though i do love it) The vision and the futur do not have the solid feel that this Pils has.

the images were still a little large and i didn't want to make some huge post with pics that were large then most screens. In nay case i am REALLY dyslexic so i try not to write.
I'll work on an actuall review but it will take a few days. Also I don't consider myself to be any kind of authority on DE razors. I'm just a guy that is tired of giving his money to Gillette.
Many thanks for the great photos. So one version of the razor has a flat sided handle and the other is round ? Are there other differences in the two models or is one simply an older edition than the other ?
Comes in three versions, in addition to the two pictured versions You can also have it in this third version

Actually there are 7 versions
• Brass Polished Nickle Plated (round)
• Brass Polished Nickle Plated (hexagonal)
• Stainless Steel Matt finish (Round)
• Brass Polished Nickle Plate /w black acrylic
• Stainless Steel Matt Finish /w black acrylic
• Brass Polished & Gold Plated (round)
There is also a conbo that has a Stainless Steel Matt Finish shaft but the head and end parts are Brass Polished Nickle Plated
How aggressive is it? I really like the looks of it.
I haven't used a DE in years now, having given away all my fatboys leaving only my Vision. But I recently had a bad cold and had to skip straights because of the sneezing and coughing, and wound up having to use a Gillette Fusion for two weeks. So a (good) DE is definitely in order...
I find it to be middle of the road. I have nicked myself but never had any irritation from the Pils, I get a pretty close shave with little effort. The angle of attack is very shallow. I hold it flatter against my face then mst others razors i own.
In the Pils catalog there are 7 version as I stated above. These are all new for 2009 / 2010 . The two pictured are basically the same. The left is a matte stainless with a round handle the right is a polished nickle plated razor with a hexagonal handle. Other wise everything about these razors is identical. They have more or less the same weight and give an equal shave.Quote:

Thanks for the links. I was under the impression that Gentlemen's Best was the only US distributor. This is good to know in case I come across anyone looking for that. For what it's worth, Ray (proprietor of Gentlemen's Best) speaks very highly of them for their quality and performance.
I can't say that DEs fascinate me much, but the Pils DEs are stunning pieces of German craftsmanship.

My only critiquing of this razor would be the fact it lacks any knurling or positive grip on the handle , think Pils was going more for an modernistic art deco look and they defiantly achieved that.
It shaves wonderfully , not aggressive or mild, although as mentioned the angle of attack is very unique to this razor and takes some getting used to.
If I were to get one it would be the all stainless. The thing is that I don't shave with DEs, only with straights. I still have quite a collection of slants and some vintage Gillettes among others. So I am tempted to buy one of those because they are a beautiful piece of workmanship. The price may or may not be high based on what it is but one way or the other I could buy a really nice straight for that money and I would actually use it. Different strokes I guess. :)
