Agressive or Not

Hi all,
Haven’t posted all that much on this site,,,but I do read a lot of the threads. My question regards the “Rooney” DE shaver, (British I believe). I purchased the razor from a site in the USA and I must admit it was the elegant look of the razor that sold me, faux bone handle and all. Does any body else find this razor a bit (read a lot) aggressive. I gotta say I’m really over this thing remodeling my bottom lip area. Does anybody else find this, or is just my poor technique?? I find it amazing that I can use a cut throat (straight) on the weekends without a nick, but come Monday to Friday, nickster heaven with the Rooney DE.

I didn't know they made a DE razor. Looked it up and it looks very similar to the Edwin Jagger Chatsworth razors with the new Jagger/Muhle head.

I have the same head on the Jagger EJ87 razor and it is my favourite DE. I find it quite a gentle razor but very effective so if it is the same head then it might be the blades you are using or your technique?

Not sure if they use the Muhle/EJ or Merkur head, but either way, those are not aggressive. What blade are you using?

Gentlemen:

From what I understand, the Rooney double edge razors use the Parker shave head. That's why they tend to be somewhat aggressive.

FWIW, I am way more prone to nicks and certainly weepers with a DE than with a straight. Maybe that is why I haven't shaved with one since I got to the point where I didn't need it to touch up when I was learning the straight. They scare me.

Thanks for all the replies. I use Derby blades. My first DE shaver was (I still have it though) a WWII US issue Gillette, the box says it is a "Khaki Set". Never got a nick from it. The blade in this razor sits flat in the head with no bending of the blade at all. When I got the Rooney I was a little concerned as the head in that razor bends the blade over quiet a lot (I thought). I only seem to have problems on the ATG, second pass. Thats why I think it may be a technique issue, incorrect angle. The bugger just catches me below the lower lip in the corners of my mouth. Its a beautiful looking razor and one I like sitting on the bathroom sink.

Yes, it could be a problem with your technique, especially when you're dealing with a somewhat aggressive razor in the first place. Also, the pressure might have something to do with it, especially when operating in the tight spots, when one automatically might increase the pressure.

Perhaps you should try another blade. Order a sample pack from Westcoastshaving.com and try them out. For me, I use Feather and the Gillette 7 O'Clock "sharp edge" in the yellow packets. Love them.

Hi, just for clarification, the Rooney razor does NOT use the Jagger/Muhle DE head. Only razors made by Edwin Jagger use the Edwin Jagger head. Not sure where they are made or by whom. Hope this helps - Sheafshaver

I would try a few different blades before you write the razor off. Personally, I have always found the Derby's a bit rough. My "go to" blades are the Israeli red pack Personna's but you can buy sample packs from several sources that have a few to try.

The razor is not one I have in my collection so I will ask the question, is it one where the head can be removed? If so, you might be able to buy a cheap Merkur and swap the head over.
