    Default Single Edge Blades

    Hello,

I'm new to the forum and have a question about blades. I've been shaving with an old Ever Ready travel razor for a couple of months now and I need to purchase some blades (see photo). This razor takes single edge blades, so I bought a pack of them in the shaving section at my local pharmacy. The blades are horrible. Does anyone know of a company that makes decent blades for these old razors?

    Thanks,
    Cliff

Cliff, were the blades you bought Gem blades ? I haven't even had an Eveready but I believe they take the Gem SE blades. If they were Gems that is about par for the course. IME they are not on par with something like a Feather DE but they well shave you. There is a company called Ted Pella that also sells Gem SE but I believe they are the same. At least the blades I bought from them appeared to be.

    Cliff,

I use the PTFE coated GEM SE blades in my 1912 Ever-Ready, and - for me - they shave extremely well. In fact the combination of the GEM blade and the 1912 Ever-Ready is the best shaving safety razor pairing I have ever used by a long margin

    Have fun !

    Best regards

    Russ

PS If you are in a tight spot, you can get the blades from the UK:

    Cliff,
I also use a GEM and find that using the GEM SE Blades work just great...I also use an old Kriss Kross stropper to get longer life out of the blades...

Thanks guys, I appreciate your advice. Jimmy, I'll check out Ted Pella. The blades I have are not GEM, they are made under the house name of a local Seattle pharmacy. I think they really belong in the paint section as a scraping tool (I'm not kidding). I'll also look into the GEM Stainless Coated blades (Phatman). I think I may have found some on Amazon, but they have the designation "Personna"on them. Razorburn - I have an old Kriss Kross stropping machine too, which I have been using with the old blades that came with my razor, but I've been told the old stropping machines really don't work with the newer electronically coated/sealed blades. If you know different I'll start using it again. I do have some old blades left but I was thinking of saving them.

    Thanks again,
    Cliff

SE blades are hit and miss. The problem with GEM blades is that some of them are great for shaving and other were made for paint scraping but they look the same. That's why you get very different opinions on them.
Try and look for ones that specify that they are for shaving and aren't just listed as a "razor blade"

Cliff, when I used to shave DE and SE I used the Ted Pella blades and the Gem that you buy in the drug store at the shaving counter. They were good. As I said earlier, not as good, for me, as a Feather in a Merkur Slant but good. PM your mailing address and I'll send you some Ted Pella blades to try. For that type of blade there are none better AFAIK.
