    Default Super Speed vs Fatboy

For those of you who have both of the razors, which one wins??? I now have a super speed and it shaves pretty darn good, when i dont have the time for my straight. I have been looking at the Fatboys, just looking for some comments between the two. thanks

The fatboy is heavier and it is adjustable. So you can set the level of blade exposure (aggressiveness) to your preference. The Super Speeds are not all the same. How aggressive they are depends on which model. Personally I liked the early SS and the red tip. I never cared for adjustables but I have gotten great shaves with them.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

For me personally the slim adjustable, black beauty (Gillette Long Black Handle Adjustable) and early SS are my favorite. The Fatboy is very nice looking with that stubby heavier weight but my slim works better for me.

I have both and its the Fatboy that wins for me hands down , thicker handle adjustable and gives me the closest shave up there with the Merkur 39C , SS gives great shaves as you know but being able to dail up the closeness of the shave on the fatboy is a big plus and I have no problem getting genuine BBS shaves using the fatboy

The additional heft of the Fat Boy certainly does help IMO, but then again I'm partial to heavy DE's so I'm biased. The SS are nice, but you should still pick up a FB

I have used all these razors. All this is IMHO and YMMV.

The flare tip Super Speed is very mild, this is why Gillette did the Red Tip, which is heavier and more aggressive. (They also did the Blue Tip which is lighter and extremely mild, ideal for women's leg shaving.)
To get round having three models they introduced the Fat Boy adjustable and dropped the blue and red tips.
The Fat Boy adjusts over 1 to 9 but in reality the change in aggression is not that great. After just 4 years they re-engineered it as the Slim which is much the same only lighter with a thinner handle. Then came the Super Adjustable with the black handle in both long and short versions, the adjustment range is wider on this and it is (to me) by far the best of the three. Later versions of this had a black plastic under head moulding, these are known as "Black Beauties".

These razors are so cheaply and easily available that it is a shame not to own all of them and so protect our heritage. They can only go up in value.

    Hi there,

If you're trying to decide which type to try next, either one's gonna be a crapshoot. These are totally different performers and you have to use each to decide for yourself.

The head designs are different, and so is the weight and balance. The knurling isn't the same either, but that's not a big deal.

Both fatboys and the various super speeds have their fans, but their opinions may very possibly not match up with your own. You'll be surprised at how each of those two types shaves, and who knows, you might even like one or both of em.

    Hope that helps,

    Martin

Oh, let me also mention that a fatboy shaves very little like a slim or super adjustable. It's the more rounded head that helps make the fatboy unusual among adjustables, or any razor for that matter. You either like it or you don't.

I'm a fat boy fan beacuse it's a heavier razor and you can actually get the same blade angle and feel as a ss with the adjustments. The SS is easier to use and, in my own experience, is a great starter. I moved up to the fat boy to be able to mix is up and try some more aggressive blade adjustments. I also like the heavier feel in the hand with the Fatty.

Thats a good question, the ss is a super little razor, but the fatboy, with its weight and adjustments, takes the crown here, also for me, the fatboy is the best looking razor gilette ever made.

Well, I've never used the SS but I have a fatboy and it is a great razor. Sure there are better among newer modern DEs but personally as far as classic vintage razors it is probably the definition of a classic.
