I have a seven day set of Gem straights and one Gem SE, Ive never used the SE, one of these days Ill have to give it a go!

I've come to appreciate my new found collection of Gems and Ever Ready's. A little over 5 weeks in and very impressed with the shave.

As a DE guy, I have been thinking about these razors. What kind of blades are available? I would doubt that there is anywhere near the brands that a DE person has to try.

Your correct in that assessment. The stainless steel blades that are available though are "excellent" The premier brand are GEM SE blades with a PTFE coating supplied by Ted Pella Dissection Tools, Scissors, Blades, Forceps, Scalpels, Spatulas. Most stainless steel single edge blades will work like Treet 's, GEM or Personna's sold at CVS under their store brand in US. I would stay away from carbon steel blades, they are just not as smooth and may rust if not dipped in alcohol before drying.

I haven't heard of any SE users having had issues with GEM PTFE coated blades, they are amazing.

the Ted pella stainless coated blades are the best, hands down. The gem SE razors are a lot closer shavers than the DEs, just be careful as they're different to use (the angles are very different) and they're more aggressive.

I am a straight shaver who ventured into trying a Gem some time back. Now I have a Gem 1912 and a Gem Junior in my stable, with the Junior being very active in the rotation these days. I agree that the PFTE-coated Ted Pella blades are outstanding performers and very smooth. Just this morning I inserted a Treet blade (for the first time ever) after 4 days of shaving with a Pella and the difference sure is noticeable.

Old thread I know but... I still use the Push Button Gem Contour my Dad got me as my first razor Christmas 1965 along with a Kent brush. Still have the box too. Its been around the world with me in the 1970s in the Marine Corps. Dallied with a Trac II for a bit and a Sensor, but gave them up cause sometimes older is better. I keep a Gem Contour II as a backup that I got straight from GEM/ASR by mail in 1981 for a whole $1.00. Always used Williams Golden Yellow Lather shave cream until they quit making it in the '80s, and Dad started using the same cream about 1929.

My 1912 Ever-Ready, used with GEM blades; an absolutely super shvaing combo for me

I also really like my 1924 (I think!) pattern Ever-Ready and my Gem Micromatic.
