Hi everyone, I want to buy a DE safety razor, and I've seen loads but I don't know which one to buy. any recommendation?
Hello, Rometh:
I suggest starting out with the Edwin Jagger L89 with the lined handle. It's a favorite of many here.
Regards,
Obie
When I use a DE I usually go to the Edwin Jagger L89 with the lined handle. I also like the Merkur 38 Barber Pole and Parker 45R. These last two are fairly heavy and the Parker is probably the most agressive of the three. Hope this helps.
I use a Gillette Tech. It was $10, and it gives great shaves.
I got the Merkur Classic Long Handle from SRD. I love it! It is heavy like a tractor, cheap and simple. I am impressed with DE shaves. (Get a brush and soap too.)
I'll put my two cents in for a vintage Gillette Superspeed...they are easily available and very affordable.
my vote gos to my Gillette fatboy this is a piece of machinery built to last. mine was made in 1958 and is showing no signs of age. and the shave is hard to tell from a str8 shave
Merkur 34 HD. Nice, hefty and shaves well. Not too aggressive unless you choose an aggressive blade. I like mine with a Treet or Feather blade.
Your going to get every DE under the sun recommended to you, because everyone has there favourites.
Mick
I like the EJ89 All Chrome. No line for me. Also The Merkur 39C slant is very nice.
everyone recommends the merkur 34c as a first de.. it was mine.. but i've now moved on the a gillette slim adjustable.. just go with whatever catches your eye..
Rometh,
As with all razors, the 'Best' is a very personal choice.
The previous posters have made some excellent suggestions.
Personally, I might suggest:
1) New build - any razor with the Muhle closed comb head - e.g Muhle R89/106/109, EJ89 etc. Very high quality, lovely finish and highly competent razors
2) Vintage - as has previously been suggested, some form of the Gillette Superspeed - you really cannot go wrong with these razors, and they are a proud part of 'Shaving History' :)
Don't forget to get a blade sampler pack - most important with a safety razor :)
Good luck !
Have fun !
Best regards
Russ
I think any EJ with the new head is a great choice as is the feather stainless.
thanks for the advice, its been very helpful
What is the difference between the lined and non lined EJ 89's
If you want to go a little old school, you cant beat a Gillette maroon tip super speed 1955/56. Its my go to DE.
The 89L has lines running down the handle. Easier, some people say, to hold. I have one and it is a great shaver. Of course, all that has been mentioned on the thread, and I have many of them, are good shavers. It really is a matter of person taste and whether you like a heavier or lighter razor. Looks also enter into it.
Good luck and have fun. :) I still shave with my DEs from time to time and really enjoy them. IMHO you can get a BBS shave out of them.
