    Default Blade allignment?

I noticed that the blade on my T&H razor is not perfectly allignment (am I using correct word?).

The blade sticks out more in one end, about maybe 0.2 mm, then in the other end.

This is not an issue withe the Feather all stainless, everything sits tight in correct angles.

Is this an issue, or is it normal with DEs? Does it make any difference?

I hope to be wiser with this thread.

    Default Blade Alignment?

    Hello, The_Pastor:

This seems to be the case with many razors. I have noticed it especially in the old Gillettes. It is not the case with the Feather, you are right. Then again, the Feather is in a different class. I don't think the extended blade makes that much of a difference as long as you are careful. I prefer not to have it in a razor.

    Regards,

    Obie

    Thx Obie.
Why do you prefer not to have it in a razor?
Should I contact the seller and ask for a replacement?
Is this acceptable for a 100 US $ DE?

    Thomas,

Can you align it with your fingers while tightening the handle down? One of my first DE's had a bit of play in it and I had to hold it in place while tightening it.

But for $100 I'd want it to have better tolerances.

Having fiddled with the razor, manually moving the blade before tightening, I have discovered, that at the top part of the head the one corner is slighly off, either is not a straight 90 degreee angle in the metal, or it just sits a little off (but probably the first, since the other corners sit evenly.

This creates the illusion that the blade is not alligned, but actually the blade is alligned.

    Thank you gents.

    Hello, The_Pastor:

I just like the blade tucked away in the shave head completely.

Most of these razors have that characteristic of showing some blade on the sides of the shave head. This is not the cutting edge of the blade, but only its sides. My Edwin Jaggers, Muhle and Merkur 38C show a little blade. My Gillettes, which I no longer have, had that characteristic, too. All except the Feather Stainless steel. The Feather's shave head is a touch longer than the standard razor blade and, therefore, the sides of the blade do not protrude. I like that.

I don't own the Pils, Joris and some of the others, so I can't talk about them.

No, I would not send the razor back, because the replacement is likely to have that characteristic, as well. In your picture, I see the blade protruding the standard amount particular to many razors. It's not a problem shaving, really, because that is not the cutting edge. Still, if you are careless, you might put a scratch on your skin with those edges, especially in the neck area.

Enjoy your razor. Those are quality products.

    Regards,

    Obie

Obie my friend, maybe I didnt express myself clear enough. I am not talkning about the blade sticken out the ends of the razor.

I am talking about the edge of the blade, the cutting edge, that at first seemed to sit unevenly in the razor. But now I have learned that it was an optical illusion, due to the fact that the left corner of the razor as you see it, is not 90 degrees in angle.

    Does this make sense?

I apologize for my writing inadequacy.

    Hello, The_Pastor:

Yes, I did misunderstand you. My apologies.

I see what you mean about the optical illusion. From the picture, the blade seems to sit in the shave head at an angle with the left side protruding farther out than the right. Yes, of course, a pricey razor should not have that problem.

I am glad you discovered that is not the case: that the shave head is as perfect as almost anything else in those razors.

    Regards,

    Obie

I don't use my DEs any longer, but several needed to be fiddled with to get the allignment right. The "tricks" to make them behave varied from razor to razor. I didn't consider it a fault, just a charming idiosyncracy. Of course, this point of view eventually led me to straight razors.

Your blade looks straight at the bar. The blade cap or top might be wider from one end to the other?........maybe giving the illusion that the blade is not straight due to more blade exposure from one end to the other. I have the same problem with two of mine. I go by the bar to align my blades, then tighten the handle down.
