Default My first DE is on the way...

I have decide to dip my toe into the world of safety razors with what can only be described as an entry level starter Wilkinson Classic DE. The razor and five blades for only five pounds incl p&p should be here in the next few days. I hope that this will provide a decent shave on the days that time (or lack of it) will not allow for the now customary str8. Any views on the Wilkinson Classic appreciated.

The razor should serve you well, might try some other blades also, the wilkinsons are just okay, not great IMO.

Depends on which Wilkinson's you use. Some are made in different places. I've been using the German ones lately and find them to be pretty good.

    Edgeof40,

Have a peek at ConnaughtShaving for some blade samplers:

    Connaught DE Sample Packs

The choice of a blade for DEs is highly personal - one persons good blade is anothers crap blade !!

    Good luck with your Wilkinson

    Have fun !

    best regards

    Russ

Talking If anything, its too good!

So the wilkinson arrived this morning and I really didn't want to like it this much. After soaking my brush and face lathering with MWF I made two passes plus touch ups in about five minutes, resulting in a nick free shave on par with the str8. I'm pretty confident that I will stick with the str8 for the most part, but this entry level DE sure runs a close second.

    +1 to PhatMan
DE blades seem to be a highly personal thing. I've been using the Israeli Personnas for quite a few years and have loved them. I've also had great luck with some blades from India. The name escapes me right now--starts with a Z I believe-- Anyway, when you get a chance buy a nice diverse sample package off one of the many great Internet companies and experiment--it's one of the fun things about wet shaving.

DEs are also a great way to touch up the str8 shave when you're rushed.

Astra blades are good, sharp and fairly forgiving. Feathers are like the hardcore of DE blades, things are screaming sharp

I have tried Wilkinson blades and found them to be ok. I recently tried out Personna and Crystal blades and really liked them. Try out a different few. I too was using a DE to supplement the straight and now have gotten to carried away with DE's. I need to get back to my roots.
