Some advice on blades?--Just bought a 1912 Every Ready

I'm newly getting into SR shaving and I wanted to have a good second razor, especially while I am learning how to use the straight. I bought a 1912 Ever Ready SE after reading some good reviews and because it was inexpensive.

I have been shaving with disposables and cartridges for some time--I'm getting to the last of my disposables now and I would rather never buy another one again.

Being brand new to all of this I was wondering if some of you might have some blade brand suggestions. I don't feel that my beard is very heavy or tough, maybe average I guess--my skin is not particularly sensitive that I'm aware at least.

I've seen a lot about Ted Pella coated blades and would be interested in trying these but I do not want to buy 200 right out of the gate. I also don't know if this would be a good blade for a new guy to start with either.

Any suggestions you guys could offer would be most appreciated.

The best thing to do when you get one of those is to get some sampler packs.

Many online vendors carry them, and they're a great way to test various different brands to see what suits you best.
Every face is different, so it's impossible to suggest a perticular brand..

If you have a Walgreens near you, they usually carry the Gem stainless steel blades which in my opinion are top notch blades for SE razors.

+1 The Walgreens blades are good to go. CVS sells for cheaper but their blades are crap.

For me, the GEM PTFE coated stainless SE blades shave superbly.

In fact they shave so well, I have not bothered to try and locate any alternatives !!

I get them in the UK from Mr Mayhew of ConnaughtShaving (GEM Stainless Coated Single Edge Razor Blades)

@ Russ - thank you for your kind offer. If what Theseus and 1OldGI are recommending are the same as what you are getting from ConnaughtShaving, then I'll be able to pick up a small pack at my local Walgreens to try. If not, I may contact you to try a couple if you're still inclined.

One unexpected good turn this is taking is that my wife took one look at the 1912, thought it was cool, and now wants to ditch her lady cartridges and try an SE or maybe a DE. Very cool! I knew she was into my foray into straight razors and wet shaving, and I hoped she might "catch the bug" with me somewhere down the road, but having her interested this soon is exciting indeed! I encouraged her to join the forum here and check in with the ladies section to learn more about what the ladies are using for razors and products. We could be a cartridge free, can free, household much sooner than I thought!

Welcome to the forums Keith!! I have a couple of SE razor that take the GEM blade and they work outstanding. I sincerely believe you will find, once you shave with a SE razor, that those remaining few cartridge blades will disappear into the sock drawer. Many people say that the Single Edge shavers are about as close as it gets to straight razor shaving. I have shaved with straights and DE and SE razors and the Single Edge are very close to near perfect shavers. Use same methods of getting good face preparation, hot and wet, and a nice lather. I use Van Der Hagen (Walmart) bought shaving soap and a Silver-Tip Badger brush and the soap is not only local, but very inexpensive. It has Shea butter and Aloe Vera in it and gives a decent lather that does not dry out too fast on the face.

With DE blades there are a whole range of different makers to try, but with the SE I have found but a few. GEM some to mind, and it's found in most grocery or pharmacy stores, and seems to do an excellent job. Just stay away from the SE blades in hardware stores as those are for paint remover holders and not for shaving.

+1 on the ptfe gems along with the walmart gems with the Persona on the box.

One other question--excuse if it's a newb question. I see GEM stainless steel coated in the white box-they seem to come in 50 and 100 count. It says for industrial use only on the box. Are these the same exact blades as the GEMs by Persona sold at Walgreen's? Lots of shaving sites sell these boxes and they are all over ebay at various prices. I believe these are the blades PhatMan recommended earlier in this post from the Connaught site. I'm assuming they're the same, or at least good to shave with--but I know better to at least ask some of you who do know before I buy 50 paint scrapers and take them to my newb face!
