So I was going through my Dad's stuff this weekend ( passed away in Jan. ) and came across my Grandfather's old DE razors. Score!!!!! It was like finding hidden treasure or something. They are, as I found out after some research, a Gillette Fatboy and Slim. They had some crud and tarnish on them so I cleaned them up. I did get a little to assertive on the Fatboy's barn doors and started the plating to fade to the brass color a little, but these razors will have to work for a living so it won't hurt a thing. This morning I did a WTG with my two straights just to test the edges and then I thought why not try the Fatboy for kicks and grins. I did XTG and ATG to finish and WOW! what a shave BBS for sure and probably the best shave of my life! It has been 12 hours now and it is still smoothe!
I hope as my honing, stropping, and technique gets better with the SR that I can get this kind of shave more often. Don't get me wrong, I have been SR shaving for a month and a half now and they are getting better and better but still have a little irritation in some trouble spots. I contribute it to using an electric razor for a few years and that seems to have my beard "swirling" in all sorts of crazy directions that seem almost immposible to get the right angle with a straight. But it's coming.
I have a friend who uses a Mach 4 somthing or other and always has bad ingrown bumps on his neck. Would a DE help with that? Might be to much of a jump to start him off trying a straight.
